Jono had decided, while he was once again stuck at the household of Clan Guthrie, that he really wasn't sober enough to deal with them.
Or, more specifically, with Paige.
She was nice enough to him... which really was the problem, really. He was starting to think he'd liked the cold shoulder treatment she'd given him after their relationship (such as it was) had imploded. He could accept that; he had been assured by many ex-girlfriends that he was a jackass of epic proportions and likely deserved everything he got. But nice? He wasn't sure he deserved nice.
Which was why Paige found him in the darkest corner of one of the seediest bars within ten miles of the Guthrie homestead.
She plopped down in the seat across from Jono. "Buy a girl a drink?" she asked.
Jono looked at her for a long moment, then let his forehead drop to the table. "Paige."
"You're really into the self-pity thing, aren't you?" Paige asked.
"'m real good at it," Jono confessed. "Lotsa practice."
"So I've noticed. You ready to come back yet? Mama's gonna have dinner on the table soon."
Jono's stomach grumbled in rebellion as the former mutant said, "Not really hungry."
"C'mon, we'll walk back. It'll do ya good."
Jono raised his head slightly, his chin propped on the table instead of his forehead. "You stopped trying to hide your accent."
"And yours seems to have gone away."
"'s a funny story behind that, actually..." Jono said as Paige circled around the table, pulling him into a fireman's carry. Jono leaned heavily against Paige. There wasn't even a moment of hesitation before Jono pressed an awkward kiss to her lips. "You're cute."
"And you're completely drunk."
