It was an odd looking little ring with two little buttons, one purple and the other orange. It sat on the table in front of Teddy like an unexploded land mine. It seemed to fill the room with it’s presence in spite of the fact that it could have easily fit in the palm of his hand. There was a small depression in the middle of the ring, lights all around the inside.
He’d found it amongst his mother’s things. He wasn’t completely sure, but one time when he’d gone on a class tour of Four Freedoms Plaza, there’d been a display of some replicas of captured Skrull technology, labeling each thing and explaining what it did.
This looked a lot like a hologram projector.
He pressed the purple button, and nothing happened.
“Orange it is,” Teddy muttered to himself, gingerly pressing down on the button in question. The device began to hum softly, and the lights started to glow. An image rose from the middle of the disk, assembling itself in the air. It was transparent and faintly purple, and it was of a Skrull woman in a long gown, a tiara on her head that served mostly to hold back a mane of dark hair.
“Dorrek.”
The voice sounded faintly tinny as the woman talked. It sounded like she was saying something important, but Teddy couldn’t understand a word, and he guessed that she was speaking Skrullos.
The woman, and Teddy was sure that it was Anelle, paused often, as if thinking over her words. But finally the message ended. It was hard to tell fro the picture quality, but it looked like she was crying. The lights pulsed, and a second, more familiar image replaced the Skrull Princess.
Sarah Altman smiled softly. “Hey, Teddy. If you’re seeing this, that means something’s happened to me, and hiding the truth can’t protect you anymore. I - I’m sorry, honey. I kept telling myself I would tell you when you were old enough to understand.” She sighed, sweeping a hand through her hair.
“There’s a lot I need to say, but I’m gonna start with I love you. That’s the truth, and I want you to remember that. Oh, Ted, hon…” She licked her lips. “Better get comfortable, kiddo, cause I’ve got a lot of ground to cover.”
