“There’s my little miracle baby,” Sean cooed, leaning over the side of the crib. “Who’s the prettiest little girl in the world?”
“Starting to flatter her a little early, aren’t you?” Chris asked. “How many teddy bears did you bring, anyway?”
“Eeeh… one for each cousin. The big one’s from Blanche, who wants to know why we haven’t named the baby after her, by the way.”
“We’re not calling my daughter ‘Blanche’. That would be cruel and you know it.” Chris started arranging the army of stuffed bears around the room. “God, this one’s creepy. It’s like the eyes follow you.” He buried the creepy bear behind a stack of more acceptable ones. “What are we going to call her?”
“Well… what do you say to ‘Grace’?” Sean asked, carefully lifting her daughter from the crib and peeking under the knit cap on her head. “God, she’s bald.”
“It’ll grow in eventually,” Chris assured him. Silence grew steadily between the two men as Chris continued to arrange teddy bears.
“Grace, huh?” the clairvoyant finally said.
“I was thinking Grace Cassidy-Guthrie had a real nice ring to it.”
“Grace Summers has a better one.”
