“I don’t know if I can do this,” vaDanti admitted in a whisper late one night. “I… I’m just a student, not a soldier. I don’t know if I can kill someone.”
deHalle regarded her younger brother with a completely unreadable look for what felt like a very long time to him. Long enough to make him start blushing with embarrassment. He started to squirm in his seat when he finally broke her silence. “This war has made solders of us all.” She sighed, and oddly soft sound coming from her, and reached over, ruffling her brother’s hair in an affectionate gesture. “This is not the life I would have wanted for you, bit neither of us have a choice. There’s no point in dwelling on things we have no control over.”
vaDanti closed his eyes, leaning back in his chair. “I just wish… I don’t know. I wish this was all just a bad dream, and that I’ll wake up back home and realize that I’m late for class again or something.”
“So do I,” deHalle said. “More than anything. Except for that late to class part.”
