“Excuse me, but you’re Lear Frost?”

Lear finished locking the pizza parlor door and turned around, his hand slipping to the bottle of pepper spray in his pocket. He found himself facing a stocky, hirsute man with a neatly trimmed beard and hard eyes. “Can I help you?”

“You are Lear Frost?” the man repeated. “I’m Lance Montgomery. You don’t know me, but I’m… a friend of your family. Your biological family.”

Lear clutched the pepper spray a little tighter. “I think you must be mistaken,” he said. “I don’t have any family.”

“Your kin are a little thin on the ground, but you do have a few relatives out there,” Lance corrected. “I’m sort of here about them.”

“And I’m ‘sort of’ not interested,” Lear said firmly.

“I think you will be when you’ve heard what I’ve got to say.”

“I doubt that,” the man said, trying to muscle his way past the stranger.

“I know you’re a mutant, Lear.”

The dark haired man froze, his teeth clenched tightly. “If you think you can blackmail me-”

“I’m not doing that.” Lance paused, then admitted, “Okay, I am, but I don’t want money or anything like that. What little family you have is in real danger, and your power would be uniquely helpful to us in getting him back safe and sound.”

“Who the hell is ‘us’?” Lear demanded.

“Who else?” Lance grinned, a sharp and feral expression. “You ever wanted to join the X-Men?”
