Jay smelled overwhelmingly of wet, muddy feathers as he clung to Sooraya, leaving dirty handprints all over her abaya. His skin was still corpse pale, but she could see a flush rising to his face, and his breath came out in warm little clouds in the chilly night air.

“Sooraya?”

“Yes,” she said, fighting for each breath. “Yes.”

“I was dead, wasn’t I?” he asked, spreading the stubby wings growing out of his back slightly as the snow started to fall. “He cut off my wings and Nimrod killed me and I died.”

“You got better,” Ruth explained helpfully. There was just the barest hint of ‘I told you so’ in the blind precog’s voice.

Jay looked at Ruth over Sooraya’s shoulder. “That,” he said slowly, “is the most coherent thing I’ve ever heard her say.” He continued clinging to Sooraya like a drowning man who’d just found the edge of a life boat.

“Way to go, Guthrie!” Santo said. “You’re a real X-Man now.”

Jay looked around him, at the teenage mutants who had dug him from his grave. Victor dropped a blanket around his shoulders, and he finally seemed to notice the cold.

“I’m hungry.”
