“Victor, come here. We need you.”
Victor found himself rolling to his feet without even thinking about it. Obeying Josh’s every command was almost second nature now. It was easier to just do than think, and it felt good to do it. Josh was sitting with Kevin, a golden hand wrapped around the other boy’s wrist. Josh looked at Victor and smiled, and Victor smiled back.
“Do you trust me?” Josh asked. “Do you both trust me?”
“Josh, what-?”
“I want you to touch Kevin’s hand.”
This brought both Victor and Kevin up short. “What?”
“Trust me, touch him.”
“Josh, the last time-”
“Remember Laurie-”
Josh reached out the hand not around Kevin’s wrist, his warm palm on Victor’s cheek. “I’ve figured it out,” he said earnestly. “Please, Victor, trust me.”
“I do,” Victor whispered, bringing his fingers to rest on Kevin’s bare palm. All he felt was a slight tingle. All he could see was Josh’s triumphant smile.
“Yes… yes!” Josh released both with a jubilant shout before kissing first Kevin, then Victor. “I did it!”
Kevin closed his hand around Victor’s fingers, a look of pure joy on his face as he caressed Victor’s knuckles with his thumb. “Christ, your hand…” He rested a hand on Victor’s neck, pulling him closer. “I can touch you.”
“I told you I could do it,” Josh said.
