Harlan watched the plate in Radu’s hand the way a hungry hyena watched a wounded gazelle. He licked his lips, his eyes flicking briefly up to Radu’s face before returning his full attention to the plate and it’s contents. “Is that chocolate cake?” he asked, his voice cracking slightly.
Radu looked down at the chocolate cake, then up at Harlan. “Yes.” He picked up a fork and poked at the dark dessert.
“You gonna eat it?”
Radu continued to study the cake, fighting down a grin as he sliced off part with the edge of his fork. Watching Harlan through his eyelashes, he brought the sliver of chocolate up to his mouth and ate it.
He very nearly spat it back out, but the look on Harlan’s face was entirely worth it.
“Yes,” he said, swallowing, “I am.”
