Johnny snatched up the folder and threw it at Mattie, scattered the details of his life in a shower of paper. “I can’t believe you.”
Mattie scooped the dossier up. “I can explain,” she said quietly.
“‘I can explain’,” he parroted back bitterly. “That’s great. Explain to me. Tell me why you’re spying on me, Mattie. I can’t wait to hear this.”
“Cassie St. Commons’s parents hired me to find her, and you’re the only lead I’ve had,” she said, stuffing the file back into its folder.
“I haven’t seen her since Eddie’s funeral.”
“That’s just it! No one has, Johnny. They wanted me to keep an eye on you, in case-”
“Did you sleep with me to ‘keep an eye on me’?” Johnny demanded.
“It’s not-”
“Get out of here, Mattie. Just go. Don’t let me see your face again.”
