Title: How Far
Universe: Runaways
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Maybe he just wanted to see how far he could get. Spoilers for issue 18!
Chase was gone almost a month before he came back, Old Lace in tow and the Abstract in hand. Something that was a ghost of his old grin graced his lips as Molly pounced on him, demanding to know where he'd been. He gave her answers that weren't really answers, and was equally evasive with Nico and Karolina. Xavin asked no questions, instead expressing hir condolences over the loss of his love. The ghost smile had turned hard and brittle at the words.
Victor watched it all. He didn't approach Chase, choosing to give the eldest of the runaways his space. If he wanted to talk, Chase knew where to find him.
It was almost a week before Chase spoke to Victor, asking the cyborg to help him with the Leapfrog. They began a tentative dialogue that, over the next few weeks, turned into a friendship. They bonded over the overabundance of estrogen (neither was willing to include Xavin in the Testosterone Club, since the Skrull spent much of hir time in female form), over things mechanical (Chase had a talent for getting machines to work), and over the loss of Gert, whom Chase had loved and whom Victor had called friend.
But as always, things changed.
Chase had managed to get a hold of a case of beer, which he decided to share with Victor after consuming several bottles by himself. He snuck into Victor's room in the wee hours of the morning, intent on sharing his bounty, only to find the son of Ultron very much asleep. And clearly, he still believed in sleeping au natural.
Chase contemplated the problem presented by the sleeping Victor. He wanted Victor awake so they could do guy stuff. So he decided to wake Victor up.
Chase didn't know why he decided to kiss Victor. Maybe it was the beer. Maybe it was because he was lonely.
Maybe he just wanted to see how far Victor would let him go.
Chase cupped Victor's jaw with his hand, and he snaked his tongue into the other boy's mouth. And in that place between sleeping and waking, where dreams and reality mingled, Victor kissed him back.
It lasted all of five seconds. Then Victor tossed Chase across the room and started swearing in Spanish.
Chase, showing far more wisdom than he had moments before, ran for it. Victor didn't follow.
