Will Kaplan didn’t like having to deal with his children’s teachers, but as Ted had pointed out, it was his turn. That was the only reason he was in the same classroom Jeff came in to every day. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Altman-Kaplan, though I’m not sure what this is about,” the earnest your man said, shaking Will’s hand.
“It’s just Kaplan, actually,” Will corrected. “My husband and I chose to keep our own last names.”
“Of course, my apologies. You said on the phone that you needed to talk with me about Jeff? Great kid, always gets his work in on time. He’s never a problem in class.”
Will nodded slightly. This was the same report he’d always gotten from teachers about Jeffery. “It’s about the family tree project your class is working on. My son tells me that you expect an oral report from every student by the end of the week. I need you to excuse him from it.”
“Oh-kay… is there a reason for this?” the teacher asked, slightly skeptical now. “I mean, it’s not like Jeff’s the only kid in the class who’s adopted, Mr. Kaplan.”
“I’m afraid it’s considerably more complicated than that. I’ve gone over the handout you gave my son for this report, and some of the information you’re asking him for is classified material, while more of it, should it become general knowledge, could put both Jeff and his classmates in danger.”
“I’m afraid I’m not following you. Can you be a bit more specific, Mr. Kaplan?”
“I could, but then I would have to wipe your memory.”
