Those words, coming from a brother he had barely spoken to the last few years, froze Will Kaplan’s blood. Nobody called him Billy anymore, except for his brothers.

“The doctor said she went in her sleep early this morning.”
His mother had been sick, and had been for a while. There had been more than a few afternoons spent taking the kids to the hospital to visit Grandma, and it wasn’t like this was unexpected... but still... “I’ll take care of the arrangements.”
“I’ll call the rest of the family,” his brother said.
“You okay?”
“Kinda numb. And jet lagged. Thanks for sending the short stack to pick me up yesterday. I’d forgotten what a bitch and a half New York driving could be.”
“Becca was happy to see you. You’re her favorite uncle.”
“Yeah, well, she’s a good egg.”
