Xavin was a big believer in research. In order to win a battle, one must know the opponent as well as one knows oneself. So it was unsurprising that she turned this attitude on her campaign to keep Karolina interested in her, just as she had once applied herself to learning the ways and customs of the Majesdanes (it amused Karolina to no end that Xavin knew more about being a Majesdane than she did).

Nobody knew who the romance novels had originally belonged to. They had been tucked away in a storage room of the lair under the tar pits, gathering dust until Xavin excavated them. They were the worst of the worst, poorly written drivel with implausible characters and formulaic plots. They were the kind of books that few would ever admit to reading.

Xavin devoured them like candy.

“This is considered romantic?” the alien asked more than once, much to Karolina’s amusement. “People enjoy these things?”

It was Nico who provided an explanation for why people liked the awful things, though she didn’t actually explain, herself.

Instead, she lent Xavin a copy of Misery.
