Summary: They’re dropping off one by one, all except the clockwork man.
Vision was aware of it the moment Cassie Lang died. One moment, she was napping in the chair by the big window, a book splayed open on her lap, and the next, Vision was alone in the apartment with the cooling body.
He didn’t try to deny the change, or bargain with whatever gods might listen. Instead, he quietly made a few phone calls.
Hal got there first. Vision hadn’t had to call him. Neither the cyborg nor the android spoke. They had both known this day was coming, and they were both practical people.
“I can hear you screaming inside, Dad.”
The ambulance came next. Cassie was pronounced dead at the scene, and Vision rode with her all the way to the Tower. Will was waiting with Robert McIntire, who had been brought in to do the autopsy.
Vision hadn’t really paid attention to how old Will was getting… but his friend was wrinkled and stooped from years and grief. He looked… fragile. Vision knew - had always understood - that unless something happened, he would outlive his friends. He had come to terms with the mortality of those around him after Kate, Eli, and Victor had passed in rapid succession.
They were finite, delicate things, and he would always go on. Like clockwork.
