Jubilee stopped suddenly, just past Nancy’s door. She didn’t mean to listen in on the girl’s conversation, but three words caught her attention and rooted her in place.
"Happy Mother’s Day."
"Oh no… Sean!" Jubilee ran for the garage, fumbling for her phone. She was supposed to meet her son for dinner, but she’d been so caught up in training… It was only 8:45. Maybe he’d still be there. She dialed Sean’s number, and listened to the phone ring twice before being diverted to voice mail.
"This is Sean Starsmore. Leave a message, and I’ll get back to you."
"Sean, honey, it’s Mom. I’m on my way now."
Jubilee was already on the freeway when Sean called her back. "Don’t bother coming, I’ve already left."
"Sweetheart, I didn’t mean to be so late, but the X-People-"
"Always come first. I’ve noticed."
He hung up without another word.
"Dammit."
She continued to drive, going to the Sound and Fury in hopes of her son being there. She arrived just as Jono was locking up for the night.
He’s not here. Went out with his friends, her ex-husband explained. In a bit of a mood, our Sean. Jono cocked an eyebrow. If you want to make it up to him, I’d suggest being at the Battle of the Bands next month.
"I’ll try," Jubilee said, "but you know how things get."
I remember, Jono said. Hold on a tick, there’s something… The telepath ducked back into the record store and came back out with a single pink rose. Happy Mother’s Day.
