It was an automatic reaction. Tommy didn’t even think about it as he took a pinch of the spilled salt and tossed it over his shoulder. He looked at met the somewhat surprised gazes of his teammates, and all he could think to say was, “What?”
“Never would have pegged you for the superstitious type,” Kate said, taking a dainty bite from her hamburger.
“I’m not,” Tommy said.
Eli snorted, and Teddy covered a grin with his soda.
“There’s nothing wrong with it,” Billy said, coming to his doppelganger’s defense. “We live in a world where gods and demons show up all the time. There’s nothing wrong with taking preventative measures.”
“Uh, what?” Tommy asked, having finished his fries and started on the fourth of his burgers.
“Salt is one of the best known ways to ward off evil spirits. That’s where the tossing salt over the shoulder thing came from. I’ve got a book-”
A collective groan rose from the teenagers as Billy reached for his backpack.
