“Is there something wrong?”
Jeffery Altman-Kaplan spun his chair around to face Deanna, his ears twitching. “Hm?”
“You jump every time a transmission comes in,” she said, orangey-yellow swirling over her skin. “What’s wrong?”
Jeff swept a hand through his hair, grimacing as his ears drooped. “Any minute now,” he predicted, “Pop’s gonna find out I’m gone, and he’s gonna get on the line and make me come back. He’s gonna go ballistic.”
Deanna took Jeff’s hand and squeezed it, her skin as warm as a sunny day. “It’s going to be alright.”
“Promise?” Jeff asked hopefully.
“Promise.”
