Johnny Gallo stood on the subway platform, reading the graffiti sprayed on the walls. Most of it was pure trash, but he found himself looking at a poem someone had scrawled in neon green and wishing he had some way of preserving it. New York never ceased to amaze him. He would be surrounded by ugliness and hatred and decay, then something so perfect, so stunning would jump out at him and remind him that there were things worth living for, worth fighting for.
He ducked his head and smiled to himself, humming an old Simon and Garfunkle song as he waited for the train.
