Ignorance is Bliss

“Do you know me?” Jesus asked the ticket taker. The man looked over the shaggy haired, robe clad martyr and thought of the nicest way to turn away a bum.

“I don’t believe that I…” He scratched his head and was taken over by the vision of a woman on Jesus’ arm. “Is that…” He licked his lips and fluttered his eyelids. “Marylyn Monroe?”

“That’s what it was!” she said, as though the words were an epiphanious cue from above.

“That’s been bothering her all afternoon,” Jesus said to the man. “Now we have to find out who I am,” he said to the dead sex symbol.

They continued through the fairgrounds, past the merry-go-round, past the hall of mirrors, and stopped at the test your strength game. “Step right up,” a dense man holding a goliathian mallet called out to the Son of God, “you there, why not win the little lady a prize?”

Jesus looked at the man the way a person watches their train as it leaves the station. He approached the man in a sad but curious manner, eyeballing the mallet as though it were some weapon in a museum exhibit.

“I want to try this out,” Ms. Monroe yelled from a shooting gallery. The temporary trance that held Jesus ceased and he found his way to Marylyn.

“What is it?” He asked, scrutinizing an air rifle.

“It’s a gun,” Marylyn replied.

“I see. What does it do?”
“It shoots bullets.”

“At those, flat people?”

Yeah, it knocks them ova’.”

“You mean, it kills them?”

“They’re only cardboard cut outs.”

“And if they were real people?”
“If it were a real gun, it’d kill them.”

“How inhumane!” Jesus said in disbelief.

“Jesus Christ, it’s really not that bad.”

“Oh my,” He said, on His second discovery that he was the Chosen One, “I have forgotten myself. I have forgotten the world.” He left the fair, left the Pearly Gates of Heaven for the realm between Heaven and Earth.

He realized all that was going wrong down on our world, He saw the hungry and He saw the poor.

But He saw that they hadn’t only forgotten His love, they forgotten how to love. Jesus went back to Marylyn, still taking aim at all those lucky enough to never have souls.

“What do I do?” He asked. “They’ll only return their world to one of hate and ignorance as they’ve done before.”

She pulled the trigger and took out an innocent bystander, “Just forget it. They should come around before its too late, right?”
