Anyone paying attention to my AO3 tag will notice I've just been shooing a few old Yuletide stories up onto the archive...belatedly, for meme-convenience. *g*
2003
I wrote three stories for Yuletide's first year, one assignment and two pinch-hits:
Confidence Men (6546 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Oceans 11Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Danny Ocean/Rusty Ryan
Characters: Danny Ocean, Rusty Ryan
Summary: Before Tess, there was Rusty, and when Danny is trying to remember who he is and where he belongs, where else would he turn?
I was absolutely thrilled to get O11 for my first Yuletide, and
Destina as my recipient to boot! It was smack in my comfort-and-joy zone, frankly, letting me fling myself wholeheartedly into the movie and the slash-pair, take All The Notes, and do my best to craft something I thought she would like. My preferences lean more toward the First Time tag than the Established Relationship tag, and even though this story technically has both, even the modern-day stuff felt first-timey to me, given the need Danny is feeling to rebuild himself anew through the relationship.
Punishment and Grace (1893 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and PunishmentRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov/Dmitri Prokofich Razumikhin
Characters: Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, Dmitri Prokofich Razumikhin
Summary: A scene set during Chapter 3, when Raskolnikov wakes from his fever and Razumikhin looks after him, plus an epilogue. It was a great love, a faithfulness that could not be borne any longer.
I loved reading Crime and Punishment in high school, seriously. It felt like an episode of Columbo, with the audience already knowing the murderer and then the clever-but-dissembling shabby detective sidles in and slowly winds the net up tight. I wrote a little paper that compared Raskolnikov and Razhumikin to Hamlet and Horatio, the unstable, troubled hero and his faithful, steady heart's-friend--Give me that man/That is not passion's slave, and I will wear him/In my heart's core, ay, in my heart of heart,/As I do thee. (I was a slash fan born not made. *g*)
Out Of This Room (1802 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes seriesRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson
Summary: Three roads lead from the room of the Three Garridebs: one of sorrow, one of suffering, and one of joy.
My only completed attempt at Holmes/Watson so far. Oh, boys. Since time was so short, I forced the story to stay very focused by riffing on that one moment in the Three Garridebs when Watson gets hurt (SIGH ♥). I get a kick out of the One/Two/Three titles. And I love that AUs allow for playing with very unhappy outcomes, for the angst of it, without doing any permanent harm. I said to someone once that I don't write death stories--and then I remembered this one, and said, "Well, I killed Watson once. But he got better!"

Nom de Coeur (12725 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
CasablancaRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rick Blaine/Louis Renault
Characters: Rick Blaine, Louis Renault, Sam (Casablanca)
Summary: This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship--but beginnings are only seeds, and it's a long way to Brazzaville.
I loved writing this story SO MUCH. Nnnngh. I already knew and loved the movie very well, but now I had an excuse to watch it again twenty more times, and again, Take All The Notes. And do research, and track down maps of train routes (existing and proposed) in Vichy North Africa, and and and. It's my own little black-and-white travel-romance picture. And while it broke my heart to see Rick leave Sam, I thought it felt right that Rick brings the same sort of unfairness to bear on Sam, and Sam's undoubted morality and courage, that we had seen Rick in the movie bring to bear on Ilsa--i.e., 'I need you to leave me, against your will and inclination, to protect someone else dear to both of us (as well as yourself, dear to me).'

C/Fe (15343 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Isaac Asimov - Robot seriesRating: Mature
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: R. Daneel Olivaw/Elijah Baley
Characters: R. Daneel Olivaw, Elijah Baley
Summary: Set directly after their third novel, The Robots of Dawn. After the events on Aurora, Elijah Baley anticipates an uneventful trip back to Earth. But the trip is anything but uneventful, and soon Baley is faced with more mysteries--both professional, and personal.
I love the Baley/Olivaw books intensely; I read them for the first time in junior high, I think, and oh man, did they hit my pairing buttons. I hadn't thought to offer them before this year, but when I got the assignment I was excited to have a chance to try plotting an Asimov-style science-fiction/mystery (I have read and re-read and re-re-read a lot of Asimov's mysteries, science-fiction and otherwise). And I remember when the title came to me, before the story ever did. I cackled. *g* You guys, I couldn't help it, Asimov made me do it. I don't think this fandom is named quite right in the archive, though...it seems to have been subsumed by the "I, Robot" short stories, and while they're all technically in the same universe, the time frames, styles, genres, and characters are very far apart.
2006
The Buried Treasure Racket (26786 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
The StingRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Henry Gondorff/Johnny Hooker
Characters: Henry Gondorff, Johnny Hooker
Summary: After the events of the movie, Henry and Johnny take it on the lam, and run smack into a few complications and a few revelations.
I was so scared this year, and not just because I love these characters and their world so much my heart nearly implodes. My recipient was
elynross, a dear friend, and I wanted to do something really special. After a (predictable) orgy of rewatching and Taking All The Notes, and Researching All the Cons, I plotted like a plotting fool on a yellow legal pad. You guys, I made CHARTS. Not that it's the most complicated plot ever devised, but it's certainly the most complex one I've ever tried: it has the Buried Treasure con, it has Henry's emotional story, it has Johnny's apparent emotional story (as far as Henry knows or assumes), and it has Johnny's con where the mark is our POV character. Some of the scenes had to do three or four things at once. I did the best I could, and I'm really proud of this story. I also fell in love with my own OC, which hadn't happened to me before. {{{JT}}}

Two this year, one assignment and one pinch-hit:
Being for the Benefit of Mr. Wright (16406 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
The Matador (2005)Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Julian Noble/Danny Wright
Characters: Julian Noble, Danny Wright
Summary: What happened during the rest of that night in Mexico? Oh, you know...drinking, shooting, fleeing, stealing, lying, sexing, smoking...business as usual.
Oh, The Matador (2005), I highly recommend it and I'm surprised more people don't seem to know of it. In fact, until I uploaded this just now, it seems that there were NO stories for this movie in the AO3! I find that surprising and disappointing. It's a warm little movie about a bisexual hitman having a breakdown/midlife crisis (Pierce Brosnan!) and a struggling businessman who meets him in Mexico (Greg Kinnear). My story fills in a missing scene from the movie from before Brosnan meets Kinnear's wife back in the states, but once they meet, oh, man, the movie lays beautiful and convincing groundwork for a potential OT3 (which I very briefly nod to at the end of the story).
Alfresco (9937 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
The Persuaders (tv)Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Brett Sinclair/Danny Wilde
Characters: Brett Sinclair, Danny Wilde
Summary: Stranded together in the open air, all buttoned up.
When someone defaulted on a request that included The Persuaders, it felt like destiny. I had been emailing constantly with friends like
sakana17 (who hooked me on Persuaders in the first place!) and
klia, rhapsodizing about Brett and Danny, giving my take on their backstories, making screencaps, etc. I'd already been poking at a story idea, even, but it hadn't gone far--and now here was a sudden chance to let my flag fly! I love the idea of Danny getting a chance to see beneath Brett's version of armor.

I wasn't able to participate this year.

Two again, assignment and pinch-hit:
Cloak or Dagger (12360 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Spy Game (2001)Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tom Bishop/Nathan Muir
Characters: Tom Bishop, Nathan Muir
Summary: Now each of them is the fox, as well as the hound.
Another Brad Pitt character, another Robert Redford character. I don't specifically track them, I guess sometimes they just know how to hit me right in the slash. *g* This is another big-time comfort movie for me, with Nathan's (Redford) entire arc being all about Tom (Pitt), seducing him, becoming close to him, trying to keep the shell on with him but thereby estranging him, then finally giving everything up for him, doing what he said he'd never do. So good. Nathan, as a character, is the clammiest clam who ever clammed, one of the most canonically titanium-shelled characters I've ever tackled.
I'll Marry You Some Time (4335 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Rio Bravo (1959)Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Colorado/Dude
Characters: Colorado, Dude, John T. Chance, Feathers
Summary: He hasn't sung in a long time, but it's coming back to him.
I saw Rio Bravo for the first time in college, I think, and loved it so much. It's a gorgeous story of a chosen family, and in fact was made as a specific answer to High Noon--when times get tough, instead of the Sheriff being abandoned by everyone else, here he draws a little band of misfits and outsiders, and they all save each other's lives through the strength of their bonds. ♥ I had never previously thought of slashing Dude and Colorado--Chance and Dude have the longstanding, obviously deep and loving friendship/partnership (with angst!) that usually grabs me. But I hadn't quite slashed Chance and Dude, because the Chance/Feathers love story is so satisfying. However, as soon as I heard that this recipient had asked for Dude/Colorado, I went ping! I mean, it can totally work, with the idea of Dude's self-loathing as the fulcrum, giving an explanation for the backstory in the film, the woman he left town with and came back without, the break between him and Chance, and his time as the town drunk (and hmm, possibly what else?). I love the idea of Chance having more compassion for Dude, and less concern about Dude's sexuality, than Dude had for himself.

Two yet again, assignment and pinch-hit:
Blood, Steel, Skin (2867 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
RubiconRating: Mature
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Kale Ingram/OMC, Donald Bloom/Kale Ingram, Walter Carrington/Kale Ingram
Characters: Kale Ingram, Donald Bloom, Will Travers
Summary: Kale Ingram does what must be done.
Rubicon. Ruuuuuubicon, I loved you so much and they took you from me. Sigh. I was so glad to have a chance to spin out some of my thoughts around Kale Ingram, a character I adore. This was mostly exploring a few of the cruxes in Kale's life that helped make him the clam he is, the champion compartmentalizer, but also positing a tiny crack that (spoilery canon event) might have made in his shell.
Into the Parlor (4476 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
PeacemakersRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Larimer Finch/Jared Stone
Characters: Larimer Finch, Jared Stone
Summary: Where the marshal lives and works, there is an unfinished room.
I had uploaded my assignment already, and was actually on my way for the plane flights out to visit family for Christmas, when
elynross was suddenly like "HI THERE HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO WRITE PEACEMAKERS FOR
sakana17". A dear friend, who had just helped beta my Rubicon assignment, and one of the small group of people I know who loves (and slashes) Peacemakers. Well...HELL YES OKAY. So I spent all my airport and flight time, as well as the runup-to-Christmas-time, with my head crammed into my Slash Notebook (also purchased for me in foreign lands by
sakana17!). As soon as I thought about that canonical unfinished-room (in which we see them spending lovely times together, as when Jared shaves while Finch plays him the newfangled phonograph ♥ ) I knew I wanted it to stand in for something slowly developing between them. Sometimes I worry this story handled them a bit too gingerly at the end, or ended too soon. Maybe it should've had an epilogue? Or maybe I'm just greedy. *g* Maybe once the decision is made to finally finish that room--their room together, with the implications that brings--then the actual story being told here is over.

One story this year:
Walking and Falling (6557 words) by
DorindaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
I Spy (1965)Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Alexander Scott, Kelly Robinson
Summary: Left knee going. Ribs not so good either. Old and tired, and backing a partner who trusted him. Now what?
I Spy! Oh my boys. ♥ This story actually grew out of an idea/direction that I had cut from a different story I wrote for an I Spy fest the previous year, the idea of Kelly discovering that Scotty bought a game for him. Ouch. The recipient wanted hurt/comfort, and this idea really took Kelly to the wall, so it was time to write it. Poor Kelly...my thoughts about the end of his field career are not often quite so (literally) wrenching. But Scotty's there, and together they're going to be fine. I was particularly glad to get this fandom and recipient last year; I had just moved and started a new job, and my life felt all askew; it was a comfort to be asked to write these familiar characters, for someone I already knew.
