Hello! And thank you so much! I'm absolutely delighted you're here, in one of my beloved teeny-tiny fandoms. ♥
If more thoughts about my preferences would be helpful,
here are some!
I prefer slash, but please don't feel hemmed-in by the term. For me, it's about depth of emotion/connection/intimacy, not about sex in and of itself. Lots of times a word, a gesture, a slight touch, or a glance across a room can be slashier than any sex scene. But in any case, I'm interested in the characters, first and foremost, and the deeper connections between them, however you'd like to approach that. (Though I figure, it's fair to ask that the story be at least as slashy as the show/movie itself, right?) (Okay, granted, slashiness is in the eye of the beholder.) (...but still. :D)
Some of my other fave tropes or approaches: First times. Happy or at least hopeful endings. Highly competent characters. Showing-not-telling. Hurt/comfort. The slow/gradual unfolding and revelation of needs and desires. Subtle communication with few or no words needed--as well as the ability to say one thing and clearly mean another. Intimacy (and not just sexual, but in the warp and weft of daily life). Casual nurturing--food, drink, comfort--from one character to another. Chosen family. Feelings/needs/vulnerabilities from deep inside that take time and effort to decipher and uncover.
In all of the fandoms in which I selected pairings, I love both members of the partnership equally, and I especially love how each of them brings such different and complementary things to the relationship, together making a whole that's greater than the sum of its parts.
If you're the sort of writer who'd like to hear a few more thoughts on my chosen characters, here they are. Along with the more soberly-written details, I also decided to address the question, "If we were watching it together, what are a few of the things I would grip your knee and squee about?"
Listed alphabetically, I requested
I Spy, Peacemakers, Rubicon, and Trapeze.
I SPY
It's on DVD (though out of print), it's available for rental/Netflixing, and the first 5 episodes of season 1 are officially up on YouTube (
1,
2,
3,
4,
5), thanks to the DVD distributor. (I don't really recommend 1x04, though. Bleh.) I've also seen occasional random episodes posted in parts on YouTube, unofficially. Season 2 is available on iTunes (but, weirdly, only season 2). The series used to be on Hulu, but sadly, it isn't anymore.
I love the protectiveness and trust Scotty and Kelly have for each other; everything's better when they're together, no matter how dark the situation might look. I love the way they speak in their own secret language, and the way they can argue, even fight, and get past it without grudges. I love the way they have each other's back, have faith in each other's strength and endurance, and know each other's limits. I love the natural, unselfconscious intimacy they have, and the way they've become each other's family. (And, specifically re: Scotty, you could also check out the
picspam/essay thingy I wrote about him.)
If we were watching it together, a few things I would grip your knee and squee about are: That time when Kelly is
brainwashed to kill Scotty but he just can't do it, and then he's about to jump off the cliff, but (barechested) Scotty pulls Kelly down into his arms and holds him, murmuring into his ear, "You couldn't hurt a hair on my head." (And it's not even the scene from
my Dreamwidth icon, that's a whole other episode with barechested catching and whatnot!)
Or that time when Scotty gets shot and Kelly blames himself (see season
1x02, linked above). And Kelly's kneeling over wounded-Scotty, saying "I'm sorry... I'm sorry...", but he can't look at him, only at the wound--and then he suddenly looks up into Scotty's eyes and says it again, desperately.
Or that time when Scotty picks buckshot pellets out of Kelly's hind end, with Kelly yelping and complaining, and Scotty gleefully teasing him as he gets the job done with his own two clever hands.
PEACEMAKERS
Not out on DVD yet, sadly--except this one time I saw the pilot on DVD for sale somewhere in South America!--but all episodes are
presently up on Hulu. It's also findable via various backchannels.
I love the way Stone and Finch moved so quickly from conflict to cooperation, and the way they seem to be such opposites, but connect so deeply underneath. I love the way they surprise each other, and the way they fascinate each other. I love how they get so devoted and passionate about their jobs, running in tandem on a trail, working to use the best of the past and the future to solve the case. I love how they instinctively reach out to comfort and support each other, even if they have some trouble figuring out how to manage it. I love Jared's
clam personality, vulnerability covered with a hard-won shell, and the way we saw Finch gradually getting under that shell, bit by bit.
If we were watching it together, a few things I would grip your knee and squee about are: The scene with Finch and the throwing knife! Especially the stricken look on his face and in his body language afterward, and the way Stone is thrown off balance and very thoughtful.
Or the scene at the beginning of the last episode, where Stone is clearly depressed and briefly opens up to Finch, and Finch's voice gets so soft ("'Course you have...")--but Stone can't listen, and Finch obviously wants to say something more, something deeper and better, before they're interrupted.
Or that time where Stone has been out on the trail, and he comes back, tired and dusty, clomps up the stairs past a casually-leaning Finch, and casually yoinks Finch's coffee cup right out of his hand to drink it himself.
RUBICON
I can't find it in the US iTunes store anymore, but it's still in the iTunes Canadian store, for whatever reason. It's also floating around in the usual backchannels.
Kale Ingram is fascinating--mysterious, but with hints and glimpses of personal life and possible backstories that send my imagination into overdrive. The sheer levels of competence and sang-froid are of course fantastic, but while he's clearly extraordinary, he's not flawless or a superhero, and I love that too. He's a survivor. He has emotions but also a very high level of control over them. He doesn't trust anyone...does he? He can be protective and give careful advice, and then turn around and be extremely manipulative, with no flinching or sign of remorse. He's a guy who gets casually cruised while out bringing home the shopping, and then turns right around and handles the disposal of someone he knew very well (and what was that history between them?). I just want to quote practically every line out of his mouth. So anything you want to explore about Kale...oh boy am I on board.
If we were watching it together, a few things I would grip your knee and squee about are: The way Kale dresses! And practically all of his lines! *g*
Will's first visit to Kale's place! Will being vetted by Walter, Kale padding downstairs fresh out of the shower to ask Will intensely about...white bean salad?
Or the entire scene from Kale being cruised on the street, to getting called by Will, to going over and...cleaning. The utter silence. That touch to Will's shoulder at the end of the scene.
And speaking of utter silence, the entire scene where he sweeps his own apartment for bugs, and what that sets in motion.
TRAPEZE
I posted a
picspam and recap (including information on getting ahold of the movie), if you need it.
Mike and Tino live with the throttle turned all the way up, it seems--a blend of artist, athlete, and daredevil, with the intensities and perfectionism of all of those things. I love the way they started to connect from the very first moment, despite Mike's resistance and Tino's hard-sell. I love how skilled they are in their craft, and how intensely they work and concentrate on making it better. I love how passionate they are, how deeply they feel (about the act, but even more, about each other), and their sheer delight and admiration for one another. I love Mike's pain, yearning, and hard won knowledge/experience; I love Tino's courage, eagerness, and tenacity. I love how, when they're both focused on the work/craft/art that they live and breathe, smaller concerns disappear: from a bloody nose to a broken heart, it ends up fading away before the power and beauty of the act they can bring to life together.
If we were watching it together, a few things I would grip your knee and squee about are: their LITTLE FACES, with every flicker of emotion and yearning and fear and distress just glowing through! The way they look at each other as if the other one is the sun, or the sun that has suddenly gone out.
Tino's protracted and physical wooing of Mike, until Tino has finally gone all woobie and given up--and Mike relents, and there is smiling and handstands.
Or that scene where Tino falls from the net, and Mike flings himself down after him and claws to the edge of the net, desperately afraid.
Or Mike whispering to Tino before that final triple, coaxing him, gentling him, as if they're the only two people in the world instead of on display with no net in front of a huge audience.
Anyway! Please use or disregard any of my blatherings as you see fit. Just have fun, write something you enjoy, and thank you very much! \o/
