A shipping meme belatedly stolen from my flist!
1. Talk about the first ship you ever had.
Bruce/Selina from the Tim Burton Batman films, probably. I watched them when I was fairly young, certainly under 10, and imprinted on them pretty hard. They just work so well together! And yet have this interesting tension taht always keeps them interesting. :D
2. Talk about three of the most important ships throughout your life.
...I'd say important is attaching a bit too much importance to me wanting silly characters to get together in increasingly ridiculous ways, BUUUUT.
1. Bruce/Selina. First ship, best ship.
2. Han/Leia, I suppose. Another one of my very early ships, and I'm eternally surprised by how invested I am in them.
3. Hal/Sinestro, who I ship with the force of a thousand suns.
3. What’s your current OTP?
Probablyyyyyyy Hal/Sinestro. Though, honestly, once I start shipping a pairing I'm probably into that pairing for life.
4. What’s your current NOTP?
I dunno, I don't actually tend to NOTP that much and kind of disagree with the trend. There are a lot of pairings that I don't ship a hell of a lot, but I'd rarely go so far as to call a pairing disgusting. Different strokes for different folks! As long as you're not actually hurting anybody, what's wrong with that?
Saying that, though... I really don't like Harley/Joker or Jessica Jones/Kilgrave in a romantic context.
5. Do you have any poly ships?
Hahahaha YEAAAAAAAH.
I have many poly ships, considering that one of my favourite things while shipping characters is working out how disparate personalities would actually work together and that this dynamic is only turned up to 11 in poly relationships. My favourite is probably the Original League OT7 in the Justice League Cartoon, but I also love Hal/Bruce/Sinestro and many more!
6. How do you feel about love triangles?
Could be fixed with more threesomes.
7. How do you feel about RPF?
I don't ship many RPF pairings actively these days, but I certainly have no problem with it and do think that it can lead to a lot of really fun dynamics... As long as you never show the people involved. Don't force real life people into fandom, guys!
8. Have you ever shipped yourself with a character?
Not... Really, no?
9. Do you have many ships that never got together at all?
I'd say at least 90% of my ships are non-canon, and to be honest I'm perfectly fine with the vast majority of them not being canon and never being canon. I ship a lot of enemy mine and slightly messed up stuff, and while that's fun to read about in fic it's the kind of thing that I'd rather not deal with so much in fiction outside of it.
I'm not one of those people who believe that fiction is inherently superior to fanfiction, because that's dumb, but the two do have different conventions. And the vast majority of the time I'd rather see them not cross.
10. Do you ship any characters that have never met?
This is a weird look into my sordid shipping practices. XD
The answer? Yeeeeeeep. Yes I do. I'm pretty sure I ship a lot of pairings like this, mainly because I think the characters could be really good together and have an interesting dynamic. The main pairing I can think of embodying this is Harley/Wally from the DCAU, but there are definitely others.
11. Talk about your favorite first kiss.
Um, honestly? I'm one of those people who really loved all of the first kisses in Harry Potter. Harry and Ginny's first kiss? Wonderful. Hermione and Ron's first kiss? SUBLIME. It's one of the few pieces of media where I ship all of the canon pairings, and I'm not quite sure why. XD
12. Have you ever been disappointed when your ship finally got together?
Mmmmyup. I'm not sure I can think of many now, apart from maybe Barry/Patty in the Flash, but there have been many moments of the Monkey Paw in my past.
13. Has a ship ever broken your heart?
Well... Many of them have made me a bit teary, so I suppose that counts? Be in in canon, Han/Leia do make make me really sad sometimes, or when I reach truly unique levels of ridiculousness and start sniffling over my own fic, Hal/Sinesto GODAMMIT.
14. How do you feel about will they/won’t they?
Ehhhhhhh complicated.
This might well be another thing where I have different views on it based on whether it's in fic or actual fiction. In fic I love get-together fics, when they slowly grow closer and closer until a relationship forms between them. In fiction I think that it's so often overdone, and so often involving stupid reasons that seem designed to make me stop shipping the couple in question.
15. Have you ever “shipped at first sight”?
Hm. Maybe? I'm not sure I've started passionately shipping something at first sight before, but I've definitely seen two characters together and known that passionate shipping was in my future. I suppose that counts, a little?
16. Talk about a ship you initially disliked.
Hm.
This happens a lot less often than it used to, because I've apparently gotten a lot more open minded/chaotic in my shipping tastes over the years, but I do remember being slightly indifferent towards Jason/Damian at first. And then I actually thought about it a bit, and read fic with them, and saw them interacting together properly...
Yeah, that didn't last long.
17. Talk about a pairing you’ve stopped shipping romantically.
Generally when I ship a thing I end up shipping it for life, because I'm a Hufflepuff to my core and very loyal as a result. But... The more I saw of the Joker, the more I stopped being able to ship Bruce/The Joker. I still ship it to some extent in the Animated Series, but I'm so tired of the Joker pretty much everywhere else that it was very hard to maintain any enthusiasm for the pairing.
18. Talk about a moment which made you question an entire ship.
Uh. Hm.
I'm not sure I can think of any specific examples at the moment, but it tends to involve either hints towards canon or moral event horizon crossing.
My relationship towards canon ships has been gone into a little bit above, but frequently when it becomes 100% canon I tend to lose a little interest in it. I'm not quite sure why, but I think it's generally because they either do it wrong - which is another reason why I refuse to believe that all fic is inherently worth less than all media, because at least fic actually gets romance right a good chunk of the time - or because I'm already getting what I need from canon so don't need to seek it out elsewhere.
The Moral event horizon thing is one that I'm even less certain about, to be honest, but it has definitely happened a few times. I ship a lot of enemy mine pairings, so they tend to walk a very delicate line of what's acceptable and what makes me back away very quickly... And that line varies depending on the pairing. I'm probably always going to ship Hal/Sinestro, for example, no matter how many terrible things they do with each other. But there have been other pairings, though again I'm not sure I have any specific examples, where one character has done something terrible to the other and I've just been out.
...Shipping fictional characters is complicated! XD
19. Have you ever shipped something despite yourself?
Oh, so many things. XD My shipping motto may as well be "don't ship this don't ship this don't ship this- GODDAMMIT I'M SHIPPING IT!"
20. Talk about a ship you feel alone in shipping.
All of my ships from fandoms of one, basically! Which... Would take a while to list, because I've got a lot of fandoms of one. But they basically involve vampires, detectives in India, detectives in the Restoration and a foursome involving three cosmic entities + a demon!
21. Is there a ship you just don’t get, but have nothing against?
This is basically what I do instead of NOTPing! I don't know, most of the time my reaction to pairings that I don't ship is mild indifference as opposed to anything more. The main example of this is Steve/Bucky for me (sorry!), but I'm also fairly indifferent to pairings such as Barry/Iris or James/Kara.
22. Which of your ships have the best chemistry?
Hal/Sinesto have canon bondage, so let's go for them!
23. Which of your ships deserve better writing?
I... Hm. My main example is from a most definite fandom of one, so I'd feel a little mean to mention it in explicit terms, but I do have a certain vampire pairing that is very compelling but could use a far better editor.
24. Do you mostly ship canon pairings?
NOPE.
As I said above, oops I keep overlapping with these questions, I'd say that 90% of my pairings are non-canon and a good chunk of those have no chance of becoming canon. I just find it a lot more compelling when there's room left to do different stuff, I suppose!
25. Have you ever shipped a pairing before you even started watching the show/movie simply because of gifs and graphics or similar?
...Yes.
I will admit, I have picked a few books up purely because I've read the blurb and seen that they contain a dynamic that I love to ship. I don't do this so much with visual media, possibly because of my mild indifference to canon pairings, but the urge is still definitely within me.
26. Have you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic you’re more drawn to?
ENEMY MINE.
...Ahem, Enemy Mine is definitely the main one. But I'm also very drawn to pairings where there's a lot of tension but an undercurrent of respect, pairings where all people involved are badasses and pairings where at least one character is quite verbal (not communicative, by any means, but addicted to running their mouth a lot). Most of my pairings tend to tick at least one of those boxes, and often multiple ones.
27. Is there a ship you’ve shipped for most of your life?
Bruce/Selina, Han/Leia, Lois/Clark.
28. Does shipping come easily to you?
That's one way to put it! *Stares morosely at fifty billion pairings*
29. Do you need to ship something to really enjoy a movie/book/tv show/comic?
Definitely not! I like shipping, but I've always regarded it most definitely as the cherry on top of something that I already enjoy.
30. Name a couple of fandoms in which you have no ships.
Hm. For a given value of no ships, by which I mean no ships that I'm super passionate about or create fanworks for... Doctor Who. My favourite show ever, but just not one that I ship that many things in.
31. Talk about one of your favorite headcanons for a ship you love.
Uhhhh... I suppose my conviction that Hal and Sinestro are totally and completely in love, in all possible senses of the word, still technically counts as a headcanon? I'm pretty sure Geoff Johns was on board with that, though, so who knows!
32. Share five must-read fics.
33. Name your favorite fanartist(s).
34. Share your favorite fanmix for your OTP.
35. Recommend 1-5 shipper blogs.
36. Do you create fanmixes/gif sets/fanart/fic/fanvids and so on for your ships?
Fics, yes, and I've made one or two fanmixes. I have no artistic talent, though, so the rest are pretty much out.
37. Do you have a favorite trope and/or AU for your OTP?
I suppose Enemy Mine technically counts here, again? But that's not really a fic trope... Um. I really like most fusions, especially Harry Potter and daemon ones. I also like slow getting together fic, and fake married/fake relationship fic.
38. Do you like and use ship names?
No. I know some people like them, but I can't help wincing every single time they come up.
39. Is there a fictional relationship you’d really want for yourself?
Haha, no. I'm perfectly happy with my real life relationship, with my absolutely lovely P, thank you very much. ;)
40. If you could change one thing about your OTP, what would that be?
...I know I've talked at great length, oops again, to my indifferent response to most canon relationships. But, honestly, if Hal and Sinestro had canon making out at any point? I would be RIGHT THERE at basically the speed of light.
