Darker than Black, Week 33: Hachez Cocao d'Arriba Classic Milde Edel-Bitter-Chocolade

schoolpsychnerd and I don't celebrate Christmas, but every year we go to Christkindlmarket in Chicago for the German food and crafts. A lot of it we can't eat because the Germans are fond of their pork, but the Döner Men have a booth there where they serve chicken kabobs that are wonderful with some spiced apple cider and a cold wind blowing around you. Though honestly, I could do without the last part.

The real food we go for are the sweets, though. A lot of the sweet on sale that aren't in general circulation in America are the kind that I don't typically eat. Cookies and strudel and stollen and so on, cakey sweets that I like occasionally but won't eat every single day like I do with dark chocolate. Marzipan, that I probably would eat every single day if I could but isn't widely available enough for me to do so. And this year, there was dark chocolate that we grabbed entirely to eat for Darker than Black. I haven't heard anything about German chocolate, either good or bad, and don't know what to expect, but I was curious if I could taste some kind of essential Germanness in the chocolate.

Dark chocolate on a black background. I like it.
I'm not sure what sort of essential Germanness I was expecting from this chocolate, but it didn't have it.
I don't even know what "essential Germanness" would be and how I would recognize it. Sauerkraut flavor? Bratwurst flavor? Beer flavor? There was a hops chocolate we ate and didn't do for Darker than Black...

Putting that aside, this was a pleasant dark chocolate. A bit sweeter than I would have expected for how creamy it was, and easier to eat a larger amount than something darker.
schoolpsychnerd and I finished off the whole bar, and I thought that was a feat, but checking it's 100g just like the Lindt bars, it just looks larger. Maybe there's some joke about Germany there. If so, I don't know it.

This was good. Unlike those candies I bought for my father, or the marzipan that is in our fridge now, though, there's nothing special about it. It's merely pleasant dark chocolate.

The package swung open sideways, revealing the whole bar.

schoolpsychnerd's OpinionIt's hard for me to think about what to say about this chocolate. It didn't have any add ins and wasn't markedly darker than the chocolate I usually eat. It had a good snap to it that felt very satisfying to eat. The texture was smooth and there's a nice lingering bitterness in the back of my mouth even though initially eating it, the chocolate seemed sweeter than I was used to. It also definitely gave me that feeling of having eaten dessert and completed a nice meal of leftover turkey and veggies, so bonus for that!
"This is definitely dark chocolate" sounds almost insulting, but we don't mean it to be here. There's nothing special about this, but in no way is it bad either. It's simple, tasty dark chocolate, and if that's what you're looking for, it's a good choice.
