Wandering the halls

Dora walked close to the wall since the Humans were running around in this particular part of the city. She was curious why her human, Blue Mate and Black Mate were here a few days ago, if the scent was anything to go by. Actually...Black Mate's scent was a little fresher. Odd

The little one was thinking at her again. She was intrigued - she'd never encountered anyone who wasn't Ancient or Human who could talk to her. And this one didn't seem to be able to talk to the humans directly...her mind was different.

Hello, Dora, she said softly, into the cat's mind. "Something you wanted to ask me, love?"

Dora got up and slowly circled the chair, carefully studying it with the focus she would have turned on one of White Mate's mice, if he ever let her near them. "Why do my Human and his mates all come to this room? Black Mate goes to the labs, but there was...this was different. The scents...but only Black Mate is on this chair."

She stopped in front of the chair then seemed to shrug before hopping up on it. She was a bit surprised when it lit up and tilted back, but ignored it after a minute and curled up in the seat. "The Humans here are very weird. And I'm pretty sure that no cities talk in the place Before."

"You take care of us, city-lady. Why?"

Atlantis laughed softly. There was something about the kitten that was just innately relaxing, even for a city...

This is the control room; in some ways, it's the heart of the city - it's where your Black Mate comes when he needs to protect us, to use my weapons. Although it does other things, too, and he's not the only one who can use it - you can, too, or it wouldn't light up for you.

She lit up a display in front of the chair, swirling lights showing a map of the galaxy, then zooming in to the solar system, then the city. No, I don't imagine many cities talk. I'm not just a city, though, they gave me a mind...they might not have meant to, but they did. I take care of you because that's what I'm here for; I was made to be shelter and protection, a home for my people.

She dimmed the display, leaving it there but not the focus of attention. So tell me, cat-lady...why do you take care of them?

Dora watches the display intently. "Pretty." Her head tilted when Atlantis questioned her. "Because they're my Humans and Humans just can't be left on their own. They can't take care of themselves, you know."

She looked around the room from her vantage point. "So...why has Black Mate been here so much? We're safe. I heard my Human say so."

[lady_atlantis]

We're safe because Black Mate keeps us safe, she said fondly. We have the power to run my weapons now, but it still needs him to control them...and safety doesn't mean we can't be attacked, just that we can't be defeated.

She smiled. You seem to do a good job of taking care of them...I try, but I don't always understand them, I make mistakes too often...perhaps you could help me sometimes.

[dorandy]

Dora frowned--as much as a cat could frown, that is. "But his mates miss him. They need him, especially now, cause White Mate is being difficult. He's hurting Red Mate and my Human doesn't know what to do about it."

She nodded. "Of course. Anything that helps my Human and his mates."

[lady_atlantis]

White Mate is being difficult? How? Maybe I can help...I talk to Black Mate, too, sometimes...what's wrong? I can only talk to some of them, I can't always read them, make sense of how they feel and what they need...

The kitten had a second's thought that maybe she shouldn't tell the city-lady this, but city-lady protected and cared for the Humans so what hard could it do?

"He doesn't care for Red Mate like the others do. He only likes her like a mate when she's hurt or submissive to him. She heard and went running from the room. My Human tore into White Mate for his hurtful words. Andy told me about it all--I was napping."

I'll talk to Black Mate, then, she promised. He needs to go home...they all need him, I think. And he needs them.

Dora yawned as she nodded. "Yes, they do. They miss him very much...plus my Human wants to talk to everyone soon. Something about no more secrets; Andy wasn't very sure on that."
