I downloaded Utahime as it was coming out, but I only got around to watching it a few weeks ago. I thought I'd watch it slowly since I was pretty busy with school stuff, but after the first episode, all my schoolwork went neglected as I marathonned it like crazy and finished it in a day and a half :D.
I'm sure many of you have already watched it, but for those who haven't- give it a try.
Nagase Tomoya stars as the male lead, Taro, who was a soldier in World War II and who washed ashore in a small, rural town with no recollection of the war, or even who he was. He was taken in by a family, the owners of a small movie theater called "Oricon Stars," and has been living with them and working at the theater for the past ten years. The daughter of that family, Suzu, played by Aibu Saki, has fallen in love with him.
Taro!
Taro in the film room.
Suzu being adorable
One of the greatest scenes was Taro's adorable and engrishy rendition of Jailhouse Rock.
The townspeople enjoyed the performance as well ;).
Taro and Suzu have a cute little song/dance thing. “Taro to Suzu de, taro-taro-rin-rin-rin”
A shippy moment :D.
Another favorite character of mine was the hilarious James Dean wannabe played by Ohkura Tadayoshi, who pretty much ships Suzu/Taro.
Ahhhh, so cute.
One of the great things about Utahime is the secondary characters- they really cement you in the little town and pull you into the story.
The opening credits are very pretty:

The themesong is 'SEISYuN' by Nagase's band, TOKIO. The song is completely perfect for the drama. You can download it

The drama begins and ends in the present day, but the story takes place completely in the past, in the late 1950s. It's only towards the end of the story that you really begin to understand how exactly the plot in the present day relates. Nagase really makes Taro a great character; he manages to be simultaneously wacky and charismatic with a serious side. All in all, Utahime blends a beautiful romance with humor and a touching story, and it's quickly become one of my most favorite dramas.
