Nodame Cantabile Special Lesson in Europe?
Is someone allowed to have this much fun watching a drama?
Of course, for those who have seen it, I have to mention:
Chiaki's jealous! He's so v. v. jealous and it makes him mean but Nodame kicks him and they fight and arghjash. When he told Son Rui that he wasn't buying the necklace for his girlfriend and her first reaction is "unrequited love?" Which is, I think, a fear Chiaki doesn't let himself express until his fight on the street with Nodame. Because he's so serious, a part of him can't trust that Nodame's flighty and messy nature will allow her to be serious in anything, even love.
I can't go into how much I love this drama but it was absolutely SOLD for me when Nodame finally compared her love for Chiaki with her love for music. How, as she gets closer to them, they keep getting further away from her. How, when she tries to be someone else, she loses them both but when she is just herself, she wins them over in a heartbeat. Even better? The same is true for Chiaki as well. He's so talented, most music usually comes easy to him but it's the harder pieces, the "walls" that he can't understand, that enthrall him the most. For him, Nodame is the ultimate piece of music - every time he thinks he understands her (or gets closer to her), he finds that she's changed, a million miles away, and still a mystery.
Then, of course, we get THE SCENE. I literally screamed in my room. Nodame's done with her recital and the two of them flirt (though Chiaki would never admit to calling it that). Nodame finally gets her camera back and she sits down, in one of her rare moments of seriousness, and tells Chiaki she's going to keep practicing and working hard, that she wants people to enjoy her music, and that, one day, she'll play on a stage with him. (Sidenote: Chiaki really can't repress his emotions when she says that, can he? He always has a strong reaction when she tells him they'll perform together.) Listening to her, Chiaki repeats what he thought during her performance. That every time he gets near her, she goes far away before deciding to return.
THEN HE PULLS HER TO HIM AND KISSES HER!!! Oh Chiaki.
And thinks to himself that all of that is fine as long as he never loses sight of her.
I think that scene was made all the more powerful because of Chiaki's characterization. Dramas are usually good breeding ground for reserved and arrogant guys but Chiaki is in a league all his own. Because he spends so much time denying his feelings for Nodame (with little success), when he finally gives in and lets go of his denial, it's so wonderful to see.
Now I need to go find some NCSL icons.
