I just watched the first episode of Nodame Cantabile and have come to the conclusion that being on the edge of sanity make for fascinating couples.
The leads are, to put it bluntly, on crack. The hero is a classic Type A freakzoid who sees the world in terms of music notes, harmony and discord, mainly the latter. He's anal and arrogant and he smacks the heroine around whenever she irritates him and if he were a real person standing right in front of me, I would've beaten the tar out of him. But because he's a jerk that lives in wonderful world of doramas, rather than smack him silly, our heroine, the free-wheeling Nodame, falls for him instead. Because in the drama universe, jerks make the best soul mates. See Doumyouji Tsukasa, Shin Goon, Kurosagi and nearly every romantic drama hero that ever existed.
As for Nodame- well let's just say I've never come across a heroine in any medium that is ok with not washing her hair for days on end. Or brings strange, old lechers back to have dinner with their less than enthused crush. Although I just thought the scene where he force bathes her was strangely endearing. Nothing says true lurv like imposing hygiene on your meant to be. But I suppose that was as much for him as it was for Nodame. After all, it was bad enough wallowing in the sty that is Noda's apartment. If there ever comes a time when they run passionately into each other's arms, nothing kills the mood like unwashed tresses and BO.
In short, they are perfect for each other. He's an insane neat freak. She's an insane slob. They live in world that is more rational than they are. Its almost as if they have no other choice but to like each other.
Isn't mania romantic?
