Tag problem - now that we speak of Hana Kimi twdrama as Hana Kimi, what do we tag the jdrama with? Hanazakari no Kimitachi e? Or as the article below mentions, something like "hana kimi: ikemen paradise"?? The mod can decide on this. :)

Okay, so what I refer to is this:

'Hana Kimi' drama confirmed
Mon, May 21, 2007 (4:06pm EDT)
The rumors of a live-action "Hanazakari no Kimitachi e" series have finally been confirmed. The drama, which has been given the subtitle "Ikemen Paradise," will air every Tuesday at 9:00pm on Fuji TV, starting on July 3. Maki Horikita, Shun Oguri, and Toma Ikuta have been cast in major roles.

The drama is based on the popular manga of the same name by Hisaya Nakajo, which has already been dramatized in Taiwan. Horikita plays the protagonist Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl in the U.S. who one day sees the young athlete Izumi Sano (Oguri) compete in the high jump on television. She begins to idolize him, and decides to move to Japan to attend the same school as him. However, Izumi goes to an all-boys school, so Mizuki disguises herself as a boy to achieve her dream of being with her idol.

Toma plays the part of Shuichi Nakatsu, a classmate and friend of Mizuki and Izumi.

Ironically, I now think Maki might be the only iffy choice here. I mean, okay, I guess if the stay true to the original manga more than HK twdrama.. But in twdrama I loved that it wasn't all unrealistic and "Wow that boy sure looks like a chick!", it was more like, "Hmm he looks very cute, and maybe a little girly but surely he couldn't be a girl!". It was somehow a little more believable.

So yeah, I don't know. Will see how they handle it.

BUT. I've not seen either Oguri or Toma in anything but I'm already SOLD. Which is weird and perhaps too optimistic of me but sdjdhfgd seriouslyyy!

I must be the most shallow whore on god's green earth, though, as what convinced me of Toma was pretty much picspam number 1 and picspam number 2.

Or maybe it was this pic:

omgomgomgomg. Nakatsu > Sano in hotness, for realz.

Though Sano's not bad, either - though the way people picspam the actor in HYD 2, I have a feeling the hotness comes off better in live action footage.

But even though I am iffy as going back to Mizuki as this ubergirly-looking character where the only distinction is her haircut which is "boyish", I just cannot imagine a cuter Mizuki than Maki.

I just. I don't know. I have a feeling I'll love Hana Kimi in any of its drama incarnations - though Korea will probably never bite the hook.

Though loving this drama will not take away one inch of my ENORMOUS love for the twdrama version, I mean, damn. That thing introduced me to Jiro (properly), Fahrenheit, Ella + S.H.E, TANK, Danson, Chord, friggin' EVERYBODY I love in Taiwan right now.

But you know, Japan can be cool, too. Just not as often as Korea/Taiwan. But OMGG. JULY 3RD PLZ COME FAST.

That's what I posted before I went to bed. Then I went to bed, then I read flist in the morning, saw people squeeing, saw people going 'hmm', and started going 'hmm' myself. Then I summed up my feelings to a friend in a comment like this:

Half of me is excited like nothing else, bursting from anticipation - half of me is pre-emptively angry at the jdrama-lovers who will dismiss the Taiwanese drama because it's not Japanese or because Ella isn't "pretty enough" in it or whatever-the-heck.

Because yes, I do sincerely hope that people will check out twdrama prior to squeeing their hearts out over jdrama as it airs. As an adaptation, Hua Yang Shao Nian Shao Nu (the Chinese title of the twdrama) had some glitches in the last eps that make even the most hardcore fan - that's me - go, "Wow, that just wasn't good writing." but overall, it was amazing in comedy and cuteness. The performances were just amazing, especially given the general unprofessionality of Taiwanese idols as actors but Ella totally owned the role.

The jdrama version, IMO, is allowed to be closer to the manga original because the cultural context is the same one as in the manga. Like I don't think a girlier girl playing Rui Xi in Hua Yang would've worked (it brought at least some sense of realism to the otherwise over-the-top drama) but I'm open to Maki playing Mizuki.

Of course, I can't obligate people to watch all of Hua Yang just because they're interested in the jdrama... But if you can make the effort of downloading a few episodes and see how you like it, why not do it? Chances are you'll end up really loving it, and then you can compare the two - if such comparisons are fair to begin with.

Pre-emptive bitterness aside, I seriously can't wait to see how they turn the manga into an 11-episode live action. Maybe they'll find a plot point to make a happy ending of sorts? (SMALL MANGA SPOILER!!! - the ball comes to mind as one potential ending!)

Maybe they'll cut the subplots a lot and shorten events. Maybe they'll just have a Hana Kimi 2.

Point is - cannot wait.

(Also I have added excitement that now that I've read the manga, seen the twdrama, I can watch the episodes raw as I wait for subs. Yaaaay.)
