Ever since I discovered the love that is ISWAK, I couldn't wait until the next drama with Joe Cheng came out. I wouldn't say that I necessarily counted the days until Summer x Summer came out, but it might have been in the back of my mind.... So, imagine my excitement when Intangible Fansubs released the first episode subs on Saturday! I ended up not getting home until very late, and I wanted to fully appreciate the hour and 11 minutes that I would be spending with Joe, so I elected to go to sleep and watch it yesterday morning. And after watching it....I'm a little shell shocked. I mean Joe's extremely cute and adorable (*contemplates an ISWAK rewatch*), but it seems a little over the top for my taste.
I know that twdramas have a tendency to be overdramatic in a cutesy way, but I think that Summer x Summer reached a crisis point. In the first five minutes. X D
Here's a brief recap of some of the weirdest moments of the show
1. Xia Ya, the main girl, slipping on a banana peel and falling on top of dog poop. That dog poop was actually the focal point of the first five minutes. I'm kind of disturbed by that.
2. Xia Ya running. In general. She just ran really awkwardly.
3. Someone throwing a volleyball at Xia Ya because they thought she was that ugly. Does that ever actually happen in real life?
4. Yu Yan, the sister of Joe Cheng, confessing that she's "fake", because she acts unladylike because she wants Xia Ya to like her. In actuality, she's very ladylike. ROFL
(she's trying to eat as much as possible to appear "unladylike")
5. Yu Yan and Lei (Joe Cheng)'s mother belly dancing around the house. ???
To be honest, I'll probably continue to watch the show, at least for a couple more episodes, to see if it improves. Maybe it'll pull a Goong S. There's a lot of potential, especially for Lei. He seems moody and a litle angsty, which I always like. But, I'm kind of annoyed by the main girl already. She's not very bright, and not in a cute way like Ariel Lin in ISWAK. She's utterly incompetent. Also, everyone in the show kept calling her ugly, and I really don't think that she is! Ok, she's not the most beautiful person in the world, but she's pretty cute. That just fustrated me... : P
I think my main feelings about the episode are summed up by one line. At one point during the episode Lei asked his sister if Xia Ya had a really low IQ, and I'm totally right there with him.
Just to cheer myself up, here's a few screencaps of Joe:
And the one actually cute moment:
