A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting on a bench at the DH (Draught House Pub), and this guy rolls up on a scooter (aka moped). The scooter was nearly silent as it passed by. I noticed the letters "EVT" on its side, and instantly realized that it was an electric-powered scooter. After the driver parked it, I accosted him to ask him questions about it. Based on that discussion, I became very interested in having one of my own.
That was on a Thursday. So, the following Tuesday, I drove down to Alien Scooters, which is where he bought his scooter. I asked to test-ride one, but unfortunately, it had just rained and therefore the pavement was all wet, and they wouldn't let me. The employee, Jeff, invited me to try again on a non-rainy day, and added, (in effect) "if you like it and want to buy it, you can ride it home that day."
I drove back down there on the following Friday evening, just after 6pm, and test-rode a similar model to the one I intended to purchase. I found it satisfactory. I told the employee that yes, I'm ready to purchase and take home a scooter. He put all my info into the sales terminal, and I pulled out my checkbook.
"Oh, sorry. We can't process checks."
That should've set off alarms. Instead, I paid via credit card.
He hands me the receipt, and then informs me that I won't be able to take delivery until the following Tuesday, because they have to get the title overnighted from the manufacturer, who's on the east coast and won't be open until Monday morning. I grumble and moan, but resign myself to the fact.
On Tuesday, I leave my car at home, and walk to the bus stop in the rain. I'd already secured an after-work ride to Alien Scooters, assuming that my new scooter would be my ride home. Around lunchtime, I called them to see if they'd received the title yet.
"We got some paperwork. It's probably your title. But... we haven't got the batteries yet."
OMFG. I explained that I'd been told I could drive the vehicle home the day I purchased it. And then, after I purchased it, I'd have to wait until they got the title overnighted to them. And now, I'm being told, on the day I'm supposed to be riding this scooter home, that I have to wait on batteries. I fuckin' made plans, rode the bus, etc., and now I have to arrange for a ride home. Thanks a lot, dipshits. WTF?
Jeff apologized profusely for disappointing and inconveniencing me, and promised that he would call me on Wednesday, whether the batteries had arrived or not. Guess what: I got no calls today.
Summary:
* Jeff lied when he said I could ride one home "that day" if I liked it.
* The clerk was dishonest in that he took my payment before informing me that they didn't actually hold the title for the vehicle.
* Assuming they had the title in hand, I left my car at home, and walked to the bus stop in the rain, after having arranged for an after-work ride to the dealer so I could drive my new vehicle home. Keep in mind, not having my car also limited my lunch options and forced me to find an alternative method to get home.
* The clerk was dishonest by not disclosing the fact that they had to order batteries for the vehicle after the sale had been completed.
* Jeff told me he would update me as to whether or not the batteries had arrived on Wednesday, and he did not do that.
* I'm seriously considering calling in a credit card charge dispute unless these jokers pile on some freebies.
p.s. I should've written this post on Tuesday afternoon, when I was truly feeling the disappointment. I'm only writing it now, early on Thursday morning, to get the disappointment out there. I still hold some hope that I will enjoy my new scooter, if and when I get to take possession of it.
