Mr. Peter Cuneo,
My name is Ram Hull. I'm a a three year Students in Free Enterprise member and vice-president of sustainability for my team, Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. Our team had the pleasure of attending SIFE nationals in Kansas City this year, and I noticed that Marvel Ent. was listed as a sponsor of SIFE.
I'm a long time fan of Marvel comics. My mentor, a fan since the 50's, introduced me to them when I was very young.
The reason that I'm writing this letter is to personally thank you for your support of SIFE. I noticed that you're listed as being on both the SIFE board of directors and as a vice chairman for Marvel Ent. You're the logical connection between the two groups.
When I first became involved with SIFE, I had an unmistakable feeling that it would play an important part in my life. At first glance, I'm far from the traditional SIFE student. I engage in entrepreneurial ventures, but I've never taken a business class outside of high school. I'm a project leader, but I've never taken management classes. I've spent most of my college classes studying art history and studio arts.
I have ambitious goals. I've been experimenting with publishing independent comics for the past five years, trying to develop new business models and new ways to reach untapped target audiences. Publishing has become more of a passion for me than the comics themselves, and in my ventures I've gained experience with every aspect of publishing, all the way from concept to marketing and distribution. My mother jokes that I've gone to college, not to get a degree, but to incubate my experiences.
As proud as I am of my limited achievements, I'm still dramatically in a minority at SIFE. When my team mates spend long hours working on their projects, they know that having SIFE on their resume will help their careers in corporate America. They have a clear incentive.
I have a clear incentive too. By being involved with SIFE, I'm surrounding myself with some of the brightest, most talented people. I'm surrounding myself with people who not only believe that they can change the world, but have the skills, discipline, and resources to actually pull it off. Just to have these people in my peer group makes me excited for the future.
I had taken for granted that the industries I'm passionate about would have, at most, a glancing familiarity with SIFE. I've justified my work solely on the value of the friendships and experiences I've gained. On that basis alone, I'm proud of being involved with SIFE.
It's impossible to describe the amount of validation I felt when I saw Marvel recognized as a SIFE sponsor. It felt the same as if I had been personally recognized.
I've been in leadership positions since high school, and I personally find that the most touching moments are when an individual that I've inspired approaches me and offers sincere appreciation. The changes that we make in the large picture all boil down to the way we influence the individual. By being a part of SIFE, Marvel has inspired me. I am proud that an industry that I love sees the same greatness in SIFE that I do.
I salute you, sir.
Sincerely,
Ram Hull
