Working really makes time go quickly. It has been a few months since I started working and I do not feel as though I have really done anything exciting. I have already started to think about where to live for next year, the downside of living in a college type set up. With my current income, I can save a decent amount each month, but that would change significantly if I were to get my own place come June. Most of the issues will come from the fact that my utilities and internet are subsidized by living with four other people.
Working for a public school system is such a mixed blessing. You get taken care of and your pay is decent, but hard work is not rewarded. Ineffective people are protected and encouraged to uphold the status quo. To irritate me further, the district does not currently have a classification to upgrade my position, which means that I will not be able to get that fat raise that I had hoped for. I enjoy working with my teaching faculty; they understand what is necessary to educate and make their students the top priority. I often think about how special my high school is in that the administration continues to give support to their instructors. Meanwhile I look at my boss, the chair of mathematics and science, and she is eternally working hard, in large part because the dean is incompetent. This void between faculty and administration is the root of the problem with public schools; the people running the schools have forgotten what it is like to actually teach a course and work intimately with students. I see all of these things and I am not even teaching yet. I hate imagining what the instructors must feel like.
I like rain, but not when it prevents me from running. I would like to say that I am hardcore and will run rain or shine, but lately I have been getting sick easily. To make matters worse, I believe that I have arthritis at the joint of my first metatarsal and proximal hallux. Then again, I am not a medical professional. It is time that I utilized my health insurance.
I managed to con myself into coaching track for another season, albeit in a very limited capacity. I am only coaching Tuesdays, and maybe Thursday dual meets. But most likely only Tuesdays because I TA microbiology Thursday afternoons. Also, a handful of my Saturdays will be gone, but at least they will be spent outdoors. Still, the track team at that high school is still my home, probably always will be. I suppose this is a good start to moving on. The freshmen from my first year of coaching are now seniors and I still would like to keep my face familiar on that campus, should I successfully gain a teaching credential.
What a great Super Bowl! Could not believe Belichick left the field before time expired. I guess it shows what kind of character he has. Possibly the most exciting football game I have seen in some time. Although Cal/Oregon State was pretty good this year.
