The only thing I remember liking about Ella Enchanted (the film) was Cary Elwes. Because he's adorable.

In general though, I cringe when they decide to make movies out of books I already love because they always cock it up and it really is lousy. Strangely, most of my favorites have been or are being made into movies. The Golden Compass absolutely sucked (and it doubly annoys me because the only casting they got right in my books was Daniel Craig and they diluted the character so much it was pointless). They're supposedly making Sabriel into a movie and I'm really hesitant cause I can just feel they're gonna do a terrible job. lol

They also made The Road into one and I have yet to bring myself to watch it because I can't stand Viggo Mortensen or his stupid whisper acting. LOL

Cary Elwes makes most things better.

I barely watched The Golden Compass and besides some very pretty effects/people/cinematography I could tell it wasn't going to match up to the brilliance of the novel. And I haven't read Sabriel yet, but I have the audiobook as read by Tim Curry so I'll be getting around to that soon.

I try to keep an open mind when it comes to adaptations, but when the Hollywood machine churns out crap like The Time Traveler's Wife it's hard to believe it's possible to have a decent one. I love British stuff though, BBC and ITV are much more consistent when it comes to adapting books to screen.

This is very true!

I knew I wasn't going to think much of it for sure when they cast Nicole Kidman. For starters, I can't stand her, and secondly, she matches up in no way with the Mrs. Coulter in my head. Best to expect little from books made into movies, I find. lol (and Tim Curry read Sabriel?! I find that such an odd combination, the books are not in any way comedies and that's all I associate with him, really).

I'm not that fussed over British movies, but I think any country other than the US making a movie would be likely to do a better job. Anything made there is usually cast more on names and all that rather than actually being suited to the role.
