I've never such an awful experience traveling in my life. The plane up to Newark was literally a nightmare.
Our flight was for 2:00PM out of ATL for Newark. So we show up around 1:00 and we're all ready for our flight. The flight at first is delayed for half an hour, which isn't so bad. It gave us more time to eat. But after a while, we noticed that it had been delayed till 3:00, and after that, to 4:00. And then soon after, the whole flight was just cancelled. My friend's dad, who was also going to Newark, was travelling with us and his plane got cancelled too, even though it was a different flight. Then we went to the rescheduling thingie and got a new flight for all of us on a 6:15 flight. then we just kind of hung around one of the food court places waiting. When it was time to board, the airline said that they wouldn't board anymore people b/c they didn't have enough flight attendents. Apparentely there's a legal minimum of how many fight attendents there are supposed to be. They even made the people who'd already boarded get off the plane!
Finally the stewardesses (sorry for being not PC) show up and we all board the airplane. But then we sit at the gate for like... half an hour before finally getting onto the runway. And after that, we don't leave for another 3 hours. So for those 3 hours, we just sat on the tarmac and waited to lift up. It was totally pointless (except I got to see Hitch). The captain got on the intercom and explained that Newark had been having weather problems and were severely backed up. They had issued a groundstop, which meant that no planes could go there that had not already taken off. We couldn't even go back to the gate b/c if we did, then they'd have to get a whole other crew because of legal crap.
Then around 9:00 the captain gets back on the intercom and says, "maybe we'll take off around 10". But just 15 minutes later, Newark finally decided to let us go. We were actually in the air, pretty close to Newark when they said we couldn't land there again! We would have to fly to JFK in New York and they would find transportation to bring us to Newark. Then halfway to JFK, Newark said we could land there again. I think maybe it was a fuel problem.
When we finally landed in Newark, it was around midnight. If the original flight hadn't been cancelled, we could've been there at around 4:30. Instead, we arrived around 8 hours later. There were so many people sitting around at the gate. They looked like they'd been there all day, just like we'd been on the airplane.
Such an utter waste of time.
