90% of the kids in my school are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch.
I recently gave my ELL students a speaking test. During the test I showed them pictures and asked them questions to which they needed to respond to the best of their ability. Or they had to ask me a question about the picture. There was a one picture that showed students in a cafeteria and one boy was paying for the food. They had to ask me a question about the boy. It could have been anything such as what color is his shirt? All of them asked why does he need the money. When I asked them their thoughts about that, some said that they had no idea. Only a few said that maybe he goes to a school where they have to pay for their lunch.
This struck me as....
Heavy sigh.
