[Game] Time Hollow

So, I finally finished Time Hollow, like a year after getting it on makoknight's recommendation. The theme song is fifty-seven amazings and you should all get it right this nanosecond.

Anyway it is a cool little point-and-click (or whatever the analogue is for touchscreens) adventure game for the DS. The center of the plot is the Hollow Pen, a pen-like device (HOW CONVENIENT THAT PENS WORK JUST LIKE STYLUSES, ISN'T IT STRANGE) that lets you draw Holes (yes, the game treats it as a proper noun) in time. The plot kicks off when our hero's parent get retconned by a bad, bad man, and our hero must go set right what once went wrong.

It is prone to all the flaws of point-and-click, including frustratingly obtuse requirements and way, way too many segments where you have to touch everything in the room several times, or even worse, visit every location on the town map, but it's fun just the same, and the story's really solid. You can get a game over, but mostly by running your Hollow Pen out of juice, which is, while not IMPOSSIBLE, relatively difficult to do as long as you are paying attention. It is blessedly not in the vein of Phoenix Wright logic where you must be employing space logic from Neptune to even begin to comprehend some of the twists.

I don't really like the ending, but the penultimate sequence where the villain goes from being merely mysterious and crazy to a complete and utter homicidal bastard is AMAZING. I have never, as a person, raised my fist to the sky and cried the name of my enemy in helpless defiance before this game.

Recommended!
