New Avengers #7

Doom also has a cameo in New Avengers, following on from the events of issue #6. It's only brief, but Hickman writing Doom is always worth turning up for...

Doom invites Reed and Doctor Strange to have dinner at Castle Doom with him and Kristoff. Reed chats with Kristoff about how he's doing, but Doom shuts it down, telling Kristoff that Reed isn't really interested, just being polite. Reed insists he is, but asks Victor what's on his mind.

Doctor Strange compliments the chef, and suggests to Doom that "whatever difficulties you might need to overcome with your... face, and that mask, in order to enjoy this perfection... you should." And then tells Doom to stop inquiring about things that are far beyond his concern.

Kristoff asks about the events they witnessed last issue; Strange says he has no idea what he's talking about, and Doom thumps the table with a fist. He says he saw it with his own eyes, he has bodies in the morgue, and he wants to know what game it is they're playing. Reed says there's no game: those have winners and losers, and he only sees this one having losers. He thanks Victor for the dinner, but tells him not to contact him again: "There will be no other warnings." And that's the last we see of Doom for this issue.

So, just an intriguing little snippet in the middle of what's largely a setup issue, but I love Hickman's Doom and his relationship with Reed, and Mike Deodato's art is great as well, with some nice, moody colouring from Frank Martin. I'm kind of fascinated by that sharp little bit of interaction between Doom and Strange, since I don't think they've really spent much page-time together since their buddy team-up way back in the Triumph and Torment graphic novel. Really interested to see what Hickman's going to do with them.

Looks like I might be picking this series up, if Doom's going to be staying a recurring character. (Also Dinners With Doom. I want that to be its own comic; just whole issues of Hickman writing Doctor Doom having dinner with people. I would buy that comic forever.)
