February Solicits: Doom-related books

Nov 21, 2011 18:16

CBR now has Marvel's full February solicits, and aside from the F4 and Winter Soldier issues solicited, there are also quite a few Doom-related books coming out:

AVENGERS: THE CROSSING OMNIBUS HC SCHERBERGER COVER
WRITTEN BY BOB HARRAS, TERRY KAVANAGH, BEN RAAB, DAN ABNETT & ANDY LANNING
PENCILED BY VARIOUS
COVERS BY PATRICK SCHERBERGER & MIKE DEODATO

One of the nineties' most notorious narratives! It was a day unlike any other, but in which timeline? Warriors from the future and secrets from the past abound when Kang the Conqueror appears to set the Avengers and Force Works against each other in a game for a prize no one can imagine! Starring Iron Man, War Machine, Crystal and Quicksilver, Hawkeye and the Black Widow, Hercules, the Vision and the Scarlet Witch, Dr. Doom, and more! Collecting AVENGERS (1963) #390-395, AVENGERS: THE CROSSING, AVENGERS: TIMESLIDE, IRON MAN (1968) #319-325, FORCE WORKS #16-22, WAR MACHINE (1994) #20-25 and AGE OF INNOCENCE: THE REBIRTH OF IRON MAN.
792 PGS./Rated T - $99.99

By all accounts this is legendarily dreadful. Plus, despite advertising, I can't even track down which if any of those issues Doctor Doom is supposed to have appeared in, so it's probably a cameo or out of continuity. So, er, feel free to spend $100 on this if that sounds like an appealing package to you.

AVENGERS: THE PRIVATE WAR OF DR. DOOM PREMIERE HC
WRITTEN BY STEVE ENGLEHART, STAN LEE, GERRY CONWAY, JIM SHOOTER & BILL MANTLO
PENCILED BY GEORGE PEREZ, JACK KIRBY, JOHN BUSCEMA, JOE SINNOTT, PABLO MARCOS & SAL TRAPANI
COVERS BY GEORGE PEREZ & JACK KIRBY

In an epic spanning from New York to Louisiana to California to Maryland to the Atlantic Ocean, the Avengers are forced into Dr. Doom's latest scheme by the Atlantean Attuma, who wants Earth's Mightiest Heroes to keep Doom from conquering the world -- so HE can conquer it, instead! Plus: voodoo, mad science and the resurrection of the dead! With guest appearances from throughout Avengers history! Featuring Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Champions of Los Angeles, the Circus of Crime and more! Collecting AVENGERS (1963) #150-156 and ANNUAL #6, and SUPER-VILLAIN TEAM-UP #9.
192 PGS./Rated T - $29.99

I've read the Doom part of this crossover in black and white in the Essential Super-Villain Team-Up. Neither completely terrible nor particularly memorable, so I can't recommend springing for this in hardcover format. You're probably better off getting SVTU, which has a lot more Doom for your buck.

FANTASTIC FOUR: SEASON ONE PREMIERE HC
WRITTEN BY ROBERTO AGUIRRE-SACASA
PENCILED BY DAVID MARQUEZ
COVER BY JULIAN TOTINO TEDESCO

In Manhattan's most famous skyscraper, the Baxter Building, scientific genius Reed Richards hatches a plan that will change the lives of those he loves most -- and the very course of human history -- in a way no one could have ever imagined. Revisit the story that irrevocably altered comics and pop culture in this all-new graphic novel, modernizing the journey of Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm as they travel to the stars -- and return with fantastic, devastating results! Plus: Witness the FF's cataclysmic first battles with the Mole Man, Dr. Doom and Prince Namor, the mysterious Sub-Mariner, in a way you've never seen before. You only think you know the story! Also features FANTASTIC FOUR #570 by Jonathan Hickman and Dale Eaglesham.
136 PGS./Rated T+ - $24.99

Now, this I am planning to get. It's an original graphic novel retelling the F4's origin; admittedly tired ground, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the pretty decent Marvel Knights 4 series in the early 2000s, and it could be interesting to see Doom's earliest appearances revisited in light of all the backstory that's been retconned in for him since. I'll definitely check this out if I have the money when it comes out.

X-MEN: FF PREMIERE HC
WRITTEN BY VICTOR GISCHLER
PENCILED BY JORGE MOLINA & WILL CONRAD
COVER BY JORGE MOLINA

The X-Men and the FF team up when strange happenings in the Bermuda Triangle threaten the Marvel Universe. Yes, you've seen the X-Men and the FF interact before, but never with Magneto and Dr. Doom on the side of the angels. Don't miss this landmark team-up with an adventure you have to see to believe. Plus: When a medicine woman is at death's door, the demons she's been containing for decades are looking forward to their freedom. Good news: The X-Men are on the scene. Bad news: These demons are out of our mutant super heroes' league. It would be nice to have help from Ghost Rider, but is the new Spirit of Vengeance friend or foe?
Collecting X-MEN (2010) #15.1 and #16-19.
120 PGS./Rated T - $19.99

This is the crossover I reviewed in single issues a little while ago. Enjoyable enough, with a good take on Doom, but not really worth the hardcover treatment. I'd wait for the TPB if you're interested.

FF BY JONATHAN HICKMAN VOL. 1 TPB.
184 PGS./Rated T+ - $19.99
ISBN: 978-0-7851-6364-0
WRITTEN BY JONATHAN HICKMAN

COVER BY STEVE EPTING
Before his death, the Human Torch made his wishes known: If anyone were to replace him in the Fantastic Four, it should be his best super-hero buddy, Spider-Man. But even with the addition of Spidey to their ranks, Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman and the Thing are now so much more than four. Welcome to the FF -- the Future Foundation! Marvel's First Family has moved beyond the simple pursuits of super heroing into a bold new era of discovery. But to make tomorrow today, they'll need to expand their ranks even beyond Spider-Man and their genius children. What does the future mean when it depends on the likes of the Wizard, the Mad Thinker, A.I.M. and Dr. Doom? Collecting FF #1-5.
136 PGS./Rated T+ - $15.99

The beginning of Doctor Doom's role on the FF, now out in paperback; good chance to get these issues if you haven't read them yet. Definitely recommended.
