Tin Man and Folk Songs

Dec 05, 2007 11:46

The dancing princess' song they use in Tin Man sounds an awful lot like an old girl scout song I sung at camp. Random lyrics to it were running in my head til I looked them up today. Half the songs Girl Scouts sing are folk songs, and this is no different.

Rose, Rose

Rose rose rose rose
shall i ever see thy wed
i shall marry at thy will sire
at thy will

Hey Ho Nobody home
Meat nor drink nor money have I none
Still I will be married
Hey ho nobody home

ding dong ding dong
wedding bells on a september morn.
carve thy name on a moss covered stone
on a moss covered stone

There's a whole mess of other lyrics, changes, additions and whatnot associated with the song too apparently, and no one can find where it originally came from or any record of it before the 1900's. Since it seems so easy to attach lyrics to the tune, I wonder what purpose the tune really had.
