Lich's Tower

Lich's Tower

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I puzzled weak and weary,
Over the mass of spellbooks strewn across my tower floor,
While I quested, nobly trying, suddenly there came a crying,
As of someone far off scrying, scrying at my tower door.
''Tis some character,' I muttered, 'scrying at my tower door -
Merely this, and nothing more.'

Ah, but perilously I did squander all my years of quests and wander,
And the knowledge I had gained of heroes who are XP whores.
Naught did I suspect a questing, nor did think that they'd be besting
All of the enchantmest vesting, vesting on my tower door,
Great enchantments learned by me in days came long before,
Powerful, they were dark lore.

The spells I had upon my tower came from beings great in power,
Glorious creatures of whose magical golden age had come before.
Guarded they their secrets closely, ungainable to all but mostly
Only tempting those who boastly, boastly claimed they knew the score;
Overconfident they were, but died they too just like those who came before.
Spells felled them, of level four.

Presently the scrying quester saw that I was all sequestered
And decided that my chambers might hold secrets of forgotten lore.
They teleported, all beglamored, though arousing quite a clamor,
So in a puff of smoke they stammered to the yard outside my door-
Standing in a steadfast pose right there outside my tower door,
My XP they thought to whore.

Then I noticed, to my dismay, that they were coming my way,
And so resolved I to defeat them here both now and evermore.
Magic, my defense erected, caused my voice to be projected,
'Fool! Your entrance be rejected to here within my tower floor -
Your arrogance is befitting to that which I truly abhore.
Leave now, quest for me no more.'

But his gall was undiminished, vowed that he his quest would finish,
Gaining all the magic sealed within, deep inside my tower door.
Haughtily, arrogance lasting, the foolish mage began a casting
With the sole intent of blasting, blasting down my tower door.
He truly thought to overcome all the magicks on my tower door!
A fool he was, and nothing more.

My defenses did now trigger from within my throat a snigger,
As I thought about the ash that he would not have been before.
When suddenly there was a flashing as of all my spells a-lashing,
Lashing out to meet his casting 'till the flash lit up the floor.
Even shielded I my eyes when the flash lit up the floor;
Brightness here, and nothing more.

When all of the smoke was clearing did I see him, dark and leering,
Triumphant now he was cheering to his victory over my tower door.
Annoyedly I hastened casting spontaneous spells of blasting
With the full intent of casting down from his seat where spirits soar;
Legacies of Melf now were flying to reduce HP to minus four,
Empowered spell to level four.

As Acid Arrows he stood eating, recieving then his rightful beating,
He learned the lesson learned right well by all who had come before:
When assaulting a lich's tower, though you may be great in power,
Remember always you to cower, cower before his tower door.
Shows of strength may be flashy, but earn you spells of level four!
Show no strength, and be hardcore.
