"You wake up in the morning and find yourself back to back in bed with an unconscious violinist. A famous unconscious violinist. one of the homeless shelters my community service groups goes to is called St. Anne's. It's a shelter for women who are under the age of 18 and who are pregnant and/or have children. It is run by Catholic nuns who keep the girls busy, make them attend a school across the street just for them, feed them well, and help them take care of their children. The youngest mother in that shelter is eleven years old.

These nuns provide a great service to LA County and their shelter provides a wonderful option for young women who do not get abortions. But what if it wasn't there? These women would be straight up HOMELESS and living in the streets of LA. Who's going to tell them to take their folic acid, huh? For that matter, who's going to tell them not to shoot up while they're pregnant? Who's going to prevent them from getting harassed and hurt?

People who want to force women to keep unwanted pregnancies in essence want to keep girls like the residents of St. Anne's, but who were perhaps unlucky and don't have a St. Anne's around or just didn't get into St. Anne's, in a state of incredible human suffering for the sake of a fetal life. I empathize the pro-life argument deeply, but it is idealistic and unrealistic. Everybody wants to protect children and babies but I feel the pro-life side goes about it in a misguided way. Unwanted, unsupportable pregnancies hurt women and children. Like you've shown in your example, the people who most frequently have unwanted pregnancies are the uneducated and the destitute. A pro-life position hurts underprivileged, suffering people the most.

I have lots of other reasons I'm pro-choice, too, if you want to talk about it. That's just one I was reminded of as I read your entry.
