Elijah had only been working at Ted’s Convenience Store for four days, but they already had him closing up by himself. 7:50 rolled around with not much to do, and Elijah sitting in the back office, tossing M&M’s up in the air, and catching them in his mouth as they came down. He was chewing up a red one when the front door chimed, and a customer walked in. He threw the bag of candy on the desk, and headed up to the register, a “Good evening,” falling from his lips. A curly brown-haired man was walking along the windows, and at the sound of Elijah’s voice, he turned.
“Good evening,” he said in a British accent and smiled.
Elijah simply stared at the man as he walked up and down the aisles, selecting several items. He was gorgeous. Caramel skin and honey voice. As he approached the register, Elijah picked his jaw up off the counter. “Is that all I can do for you?”
”Uh, how about one of those tequila flavored cigars?”
Elijah placed one on the counter, “Is that it?” He looked up into chocolate eyes.
“For now.”
Elijah rang up the purchases, and glanced at the name on the credit card before running it through the machine.
“Can I get you to sign this right there?”
Orlando’s long fingers brushed against Elijah’s as he took the pen and signed his name with a flourish.
“There you are.” He said, handing the slip of paper back.
“Would you like a bag for this?”
Orlando looked down at his mess of conveniently wrapped food and carbonated caffeinated beverages. “Yes, please.”
Saving the softer, crushable items for last, Elijah bagged up the food and drinks, leaving out the cigar. This he held out, and after Orlando had taken it from his hand, his long olive fingers took Elijah’s hand and held it for a moment. Taking up the pen that was still sitting on the counter, he wrote on the back of Elijah’s trembling hand.
Elijah was staring dumbfounded at Orlando as he scribbled something fast, grabbed his bag, smiled softly, and left. He blinked several times, and finally looked down at his hand. It was a phone number, and “Beautiful - Call me soon. Orli.”
The cordless phone slipped from his sweaty hand as he dialed the number.
“What time do you get off, lovely?”
“10:00.”
“I’ll be there."
