...but sometimes it is the only way. previously i have prevented ant leakage by covering the small crack in the door with paprika, which ants do not like to walk over. however they seem to have got wise to the fact that paprika is not poison but spicy goodness, and today were preparing to make base next to the sink. i took down them and their trail with a wet cloth. this afternoon i will prevent the necessity of any further atrocities by scrubbing down the kitchen.
the edinburgh previews went pretty well yesterday. it was the first set that have really gotten me excited about august in scotland. stephen carlin's show
armchair renaissance man is a 'comic lecture', very much in the vein of chris addison's
atomicity and
civilisation (on that note, why hasn't chris addison done an edinburgh show for two years? damn him!). in his show, carlin takes several approaches (conspiracy theories, jedi is not a religion, popular music etc) to explaining why he thinks modern culture is shit. he proposes that jade goody and paris hilton are not acceptable role models, and thinks through some potential alternatives. it uses a projector and powerpoint and all that jazz. carlin has a very dry, intellectual persona that comes off as almost stand-offish, but he has jokes good enough to pull off such a stage manner. it being july, he's obviously still learning it and getting acquainted with everything, but the show has a logical structure and some great jokes. there's a wonderful bit where he describes why the title of the who's album 'live at leeds' is fundamentally flawed. sally-anne hayward's
is he funny? feels a bit less focused but, for better or worse, has a higher punchline rate and so is more of a straight stand-up venture. the show is less about her father's job than it advertises, but again it's still a work-in-progress. it was a perfectly pleasant evening, and afterwards dean and i arranged the dates for when we'll visit the festival itself (yasss!).
i've been thinking today about changing my daily routine a bit. i'm not really working very well in the morning at all, so i'm contemplating setting more time aside for work in the afternoon and late evening. it would really help my ongoing sports betting adventures if i could be awake between about midnight-4am, but obviously that isn't feasible if i'm waking up at 8am (if i work on 4 hours sleep a night i may do something bonkers like declare war in iraq). because i'm not boozing at the moment, it's perfectly reasonable to think that i could go out this evening (to see
final fantasy! hurrah!) and then write for a couple of hours when i return. i may try it and see how it goes.
