Gibbs didn’t know how long he stood there, lost in memories and recriminations, before he was aware of Ducky at his side.  “It’s all right, Jethro.”  The voice was quiet, firm, almost easy to believe and agree with, except....

“No.  No, Ducky, it’s not.”

“Quite so.”  Ducky sighed.  “But there is no need to continue to berate yourself over what transpired; there was nothing you could have done. The events that led to this were set in motion long ago.”

“I know, Duck, I know.  But there were things that I could have said.”  He tilted his head and looked over at his friend.  “There were enough opportunities.”

“Words are often unnecessary. I’ve always felt that your actions were quite adept at making your feelings known.” He reached over, gently laying a hand on Gibbs’ shoulder.  “Your feelings were known in this case, Jethro.  Of that I am certain.”

Gibbs lifted his hand to rest briefly on Ducky’s.  He took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.  “I hope you’re right.”

“I usually am,” Ducky replied.

Gibbs brushed his fingers against the temporary grave marker.  “I know.”  Finally able to end his vigil, Gibbs walked away, Ducky at his side.
