Tony never, after the first time, makes the mistake of talking shop during the meal. Archie told him it was a rule, and Tony is excellent at following the rules.
I feel like Nero Wolfe would be horrified by Tony's Gibbs stories. Slapping your assistants? Belittle those in the industry who deserve it but not the people who work for you? If they're not up to snuff then just tell them so and let them go.
Absolutely! But I figure Tony would take one look at Wolfe, and the surroundings, and clam up. Archie might get it out of him, late one night over several beers (Tony) and a glass of milk (Archie). And Archie wouldn't be able to figure out if Tony was serious about it being a "sign of affection" or not...
And Archie would subtly (well, Archie's level of subtlety anyway) try to convince Tony to leave, either to work in NY or for one of the alphabet agencies or something, because he wouldn't like the way Gibbs played his agents against one another because you have to trust the people you work for and with or things go badly.
Archie doesn't think much of New York City's Finest, though, and he's not real impressed by the feds either. I'm not sure where he'd want Tony to go.
I think Wolfe would be suspicious of Tony to start with, having dealt with Senior a time or two, and that would carry over to Archie. But Archie would soon recognize a kindred spirit, and Wolfe would either accept his judgement or see past Tony's wisecracking facade pretty quickly, the way he would have had to for Archie.
I'm trying to picture a showdown between Gibbs and Wolfe, and...I just can't. My imagination is totally failing.
I have to say, I can't imagin it either. Wolfe usually bullies people he considers below him, but it's an intellectual style of bullying while Gibbs is more guttural and in your face.
You know, if you'd told me the last time I was reading through those books that I would see the relationship between Archie and Wolfe as an eminently reasonable and healthy one, at least compared to the Gibbs and Tony one, I would NOT have believed you
( ... )
Yes, yes and YES to all of the above. And Nero would totally stand up to Gibbs. Gibbs would start one of his intimidation rants and Nero would cute him off with a quick "pfui" (however you spell that) and they say something how they both want to clear Tony and Gibbs needs to stop his ridiculous grandstanding and go out and find the thing they need to prove Tony's innocence and then glare and Gibbs would be all o.O because none of his typical techniques are working, but this is Nero Wolfe and he's actually heard of Nero Wolfe and he can take all the help he can get....

I would read the CRAP out of this. Archie's pulled Tony out and around to the peephole to watch the showdown, and Tony is all o_O "Gibbs is gonna KILL HIM!" and then he has sudden respect for Wolfe when Wolfe stands up to him (and Archie has grudging respect for Gibbs in that he doesn't back down, not even a little bit, they just manage to come to some kind of understanding). And then Gibbs turns to the wall without even blinking and is like, "DiNozzo! Stop spying and get in here and make yourself useful!"
Oh, and Gibbs' reaction to the sacrosanct orchid hours...:D
Someone definitely should write it. I mean, timeline-wise it doesn't quite make sense, but Rex Stout didn't really care about continuity when it came to when his stories were set, he just wrote them happening mostly whenever he happened to be writing them, despite the fact that spanned decades and still had Archie only working for Wolfe a slightly longer time from when he started writing in 1934 or so and stopped sometime in the 70's, he was even quoted as saying the stories ignore the passage of time so having Archie and Wolfe still working in the 2000's could make sense I guess? I think it'd still be hard to merge the two worlds though.
