Sherlock hovered in the hall after being cast out of the room by the medical staff once John showed signs of waking. Lestrade rushed up to him. "I just got your message, how is he?"
"Unknown, the doctors are still doing their examinations."
"John's tough. I'm sure he'll be fine."
"He was shot in the head. Even you cannot be foolish enough to believe that neither that, nor the resulting coma will affect him. The articles I read-"
Lestrade reached out, putting a hand on Sherlock's shoulder. "There's a saying, Sherlock, don't borrow trouble. Let's wait to see what they say before we start thinking the worst."
One of the doctors took that moment to appear in John's doorway and motioned them over.
"How is he?" Sherlock asked.
"Why don't you see for yourselves? He's awake and asking to see the two of you."
Sherlock entered the room cautiously, Lestrade following right behind him. "John?"
John blinked blearily at them for a moment. "You know," John said eventually, "I once heard a joke about amnesia, but I forgot how it goes."
Sherlock opened his mouth to respond but shut it again, finding himself oddly lacking anything to say and was unsure how to respond. Lestrade, however, under no such compunction, burst out laughing. "Oh, John, it's good to have you back!"
