I'm glad they worked! I had such a picture of this Tony in my mind I really wanted to make sure it made its way onto paper (well, LJ anyway) for others to see.
I think it was a good decision not to specify how Tony was injured. It doesn't matter for the story, and I think it might pull the focus away from the present.
This is great. I loved this story, and your commentary here is very revealing about your writing process and the techniques you use deliberately. Very impressive!
