I had good gift karma this year.
I gave my father
Diaspora: Homelands in Exile (2 Volume Set) which he really loved.
I gave my mother DDR Max for the PC with two USB pads. It was a nicely priced bundle. When she visited in early November, she noticed our DDR pad hiding behind the entertainment center. We pulled it out for her to try and she was hooked. It was cardio that she could do at home, non-repetitive, and fun. She literally howled in delight when she opened the package (I listened in over the phone). She's already tried the arcade version through her company. I was amazed, but happy that I had chosen wisely.
I sent my sister the tradition Amazon gift, a couple books and a DVD. The books were by Candace Bushnell, of Sex and the City fame. I figured she would enjoy them, being a usually single NYC female. And I also got her Whale Rider, an independent movie that J and I enjoyed. It took her awhile to get the package. UPS delivered it, so they said, but she never received it. Finally, she knocked on doors and found out the old lady on the first floor of her apartment had accepted the package, but neglected to let my sister know. In the end, it looks like she'll enjoy the gifts.
And, as for J., I painfully admit that it is the day before Christmas Eve, and I have yet to buy a gift for her. I've struck a wall and have no idea what to get. It depresses me, but I shall triumph. To the mall, batman!
