Comic Books and the Modern Man

So, is it bad that at age 25, after 12 years, I'm thinking about getting addicted to comic books again. I'm a big fan of continuing plot lines, and boy, do comic books have them. They're even worse then soap operas, in some cases.

Marvel has some of their comics on-line, but a few months back. They've been rendered in flash, but contain slightly obtrusive ads. They're still cool though, especially their new Ultimate's series. They're retelling Spider-Man and X-Men from the beginning, in modern times, and they're doing some cool stuff. Plus, I think I'd want regular Amazing Spider-Man, as well. JMS from Babylon 5 is doing the writing, and it seems be really good right now.

I know that there is non-Marvel comic book goodness out there. A lot of the independents are really incredible, but I've just never gotten into them the same way I used to get into the Marvel comics.

Problems include expense and time. I don't feel like running to a comic book store every week to see if there's new stuff, especially if I only want to follow a couple of titles. And in the store, they're pretty expensive. Marvel offers subscription for the titles I want to read, 12 issues at $21 or so. That's a decent price, but I want at least 4 subscriptions, and $80+ a year seems a bit much to pay for comic books. And I'm sure to want more than just those four, so it seems like it could soon be a very expensive habit.

Also, there's the fear that I'm too "old" to be reading comic books. I know that's silly, but it's there.

Help! Advice for the comic-book junkie that lurks just below the surface?
