Room 507, Sunday Evening

May 29, 2011 19:44

In exchange for getting to stay in Fandom for the summer, Jason had to agree to do some extra educational things for Bruce, and today, that meant going through a list of "classic" books that he needed to read in the next few months. Jason didn't understand the point of this - when was Jane Austen ever going to help him fight criminals? - but he ( Read more... )

When Nico poked his head in the doorway, he was mostly checking to see that this weekend there was no strangeness happening. It seemed he and Jason couldn't get away from the weird and he was kind of not wanting to deal with anything crazy if he could help it.

Well, crazier than a week of seriously annoying rain.

And what did he find? Jason reading a novel. While it was insanely nerdy, it was way better than him being five or a redhead or anyone having turned into an animal. "How's the book?"

Jason looked up at the sound of Nico's voice and immediately shoved what he was reading under his pillow. "What book?" he asked. Totally the picture of innocence, he was.

"What book?" Nico's head tilted, having seen that shoving move and decided to come on inside to find out what that was all about. "The one you just tried to hide from me."

Jason frowned and shifted on the bed so the book was safely behind him. "It's nothing, just something I have to read for Bruce. What's up?" he asked, hoping to change the subject.

"I'd say nothing, but I'm thinking what's up is why would you hide something you 'have to read for Bruce'?" Nico replied, climbing onto the bed beside Jason.

"Because it's girly and stupid," Jason admitted, scooting closer to Nico. Maybe Nico would be easily distracted by physical contact tonight. "Nothing you need to see, really."

"Oh, you mean it's something I'd make fun of you for reading," Nico corrected, leaning his shoulder against Jason's and smirking mightily. "You're embarrassed way too easily."

"No, I'm embarrassed rightfully. You just said you'd make fun of me," Jason said, nudging Nico with his elbow.

Jason should be careful starting the nudging when he was trying to hide something behind him. "Okay, that's a little true. But I'm really mostly curious."

Jason sighed, and reached behind him to grab the book, trying to show it to Nico and keep it away from his reach at the same time. "It's all Bruce's fault, I swear," he reminded him.

Nico really had thought Jason would make him work harder for it. "I promise I will try not to laugh in your face." He'd do it behind his back or something. The girly writing on the cover had his eyes swimming for a moment. "Pride and...what?"

"Prejudice," Jason said, quickly stuffing the book back behind him. "It's about courting and ladies and shit and I can't even understand some of the words, so laughing would just be mean on top of that."

Nico had to cover his face with his hand, trying desperately not to laugh at Jay's description. Still, when he thought he had it under control, Nico couldn't help bursting out with, "Courting? Seriously?"

"It's from like a billion years ago," Jason said with a sigh. "I'm supposed to be reading classic books. Maybe the boring will cancel out what the island's doing?"

Nico eyed Jason's book cautiously. "Better than you suddenly becoming someone out of that book. It was bad enough you flirting with me in another face."

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that," Jason said, looking a little guilty. "I'm really glad to be back to myself, especially around you."
